In March 2016 Franziska Sprengel will finish her design studies with the degree of Staatlich Geprüfte Modedesignerin after she completed her apprenticeship of tailoring in September 2015. In August 2014 she absolved an internship at Peter Pilotto in London where she gained experience in the design and predominantely embroidery department for the show SS15. From January to April 2014 she worked at the production of Proenza Schouler in New York City. During that time she took an active part in every part of the process of producing the show pieces for the New York Fashion Week for season FW14 (pattern, fitting, prototypes, sewing, reproduction). Prior to her design education Franziska Sprengel gained insight into the fashion industry during an internship from March to May 2012 at Rike Winterberg and Comma, a subsidiary company of s.Oliver.

The designer Franziska Sprengel got inspired by the motto of the Expo 2015 in Milan Feeding the planet. Energy for life. How does each country deal with sustainability, what are its individual strengths and in how far can other nations benefit from it? Which resources are available and how can they be used with care? Special attention was given to the design and surroundings of the Expo site, the nature.

Self made X-rays of flowers serve as a basis for the mainly printed collection. They can be found in various sizes and designs. The fabrics were digitally imprinted in England. Materials made from varieties of cotton as well as cotton-silk composites have been used. In order to avoid unnecessary waste of material the patterns were cautiously placed onto the yard goods.

Embroideries, beadings and applications made of plexiglass and acrylic glass in opal and transparent complete the haptic composition. Alongside the X-rays they once more represent the flora’s transparency and fragility.

Colour arrangements that characterised the exhibition design of the Expo in Milan as well as the painting Nachtblüten by Paul Klee served as an inspiration for colour. Harmonic, natural shades – a soft dark blue, antique pink, pigeon blue, white, black and burgundy – are complemented by a rich dark green and a shade of salmon.

The summer collection consists of 12 designed outfits. Two garments (skirt, top) are completely made of plexiglass, cut in a specific pattern with a laser cutter in order to create adjustable surfaces and hence portable pieces. In addition, accessories matching colour and haptic were designed. Variations of transparent bags made of acrylic glass as well as plateau sandals treated with a special shoe colour (PureCoat) and plateau sandals with a sole of flower embedded acrylic glass complete the looks.
