In 2020, Wenjue launched her eponymous studio Wenjüe Lu with partner Chufeng Fang as an artist duo. Wenjüe Lu seeks to restore a sense of “slowness” to the ever-accelerating world. Though majored in fashion design, Wenjue seeks to disintegrate fashion away from the construct known as trend. The studio shall serve as a multidisciplinary platform integrating the multiple forms of different mediums, a visual and aesthetic way to tell a story, to put out a statement, to disclose truths about oneself. Wenjue and Chufeng are repulsed by the idea of mechanically reproduced commodities, and prefers treating each of their output individual works of art made by hand.

Wenjüe Lu seeks to recover what is being overlooked by this fast-paced time. Through combining the authentic traditions across communities, while retaining its unique historical and cultural significance, with the aesthetic of contemporary art driven by emotive expressions to become an artistic entity that defies singular definition— focusing simultaneously and inter-sectionally on studio art, garments, communal happenings, and cultural workshops. We’re driven by a Taoist worldview.

Collection 2023 : NEITHER

New York, NY, September 2023 – Studio Wenjüe Lu made its NYFW debut with a presentation and performance piece titled, “NEITHER,” unveiling Collection 2023 on Wednesday, September 13th, 2023, in Long Island City. disguised & fabricated as a NYFW Runway, the show is in its actuality both an idealistic attempt to experiment with mediums including performance art, garment, sculpture, installation & music and a communal effort to send out an open invitation/distress signal to all, an anti-fashion statement, titled “NEITHER”.

NEITHER alludes to the studio’s newfound concept of “Neitherness” and ultimately “Neitherism”, drawing inspirations from various sources such as Twin Peaks, Kierkegaard, Experimental Music, Noguchi, Taoism, Dialectics, Italo Calvino, Spirituality, Plato, Poetry, and more.

Neitherness :

Certain naivete towards the infinite unknown spiritually instinctive to humans. The tendency to escape a fixed, singular definition, natural or man-made, earthly or cosmic, the eradication of “Eitherness”. The act of defining “Neitherness” is a betrayal of “Neitherness” itself.

Set in a metaphysical Platonic cave, inside a dream of a imaginary “NEITHER Space”, inspired by The Allegory of the Cave from Plato’s The Republic, The NEITHER Show reveals one of the infinite fragments of a dialectical, never-ending Cave-inside-a-Cave symbolising the world from Studio Wenjüe Lu’s impossible yet ever-meaningful utopia. The entire allegory are deconstructed and isolated into elements, then abstracted and re-signified in a time of sinking minds and dying hopes

A Neitherer neither denies eternity nor submerges oneself in the physical reality, due to previous encounters with impermanence, discomfort, the weight of absurdity, and the futility of giving up. A Neitherer actively seeks to be, to exist in the moment while dreaming of the end of the endless tapestry of the human discourse in its entirety.
