MATIERE NOIRE is a Canadian fashion house founded with the idea that high quality, well-designed products should be sustainable and priced properly. Through founder and creative director Cécile Raizonville’s interest for architecture, arts, culture and craftsmanship, MATIERE NOIRE’s collections are characterized by mixing feminity/masculinity and tradition/modernity. All the garments are locally produced, using mainly natural fabrics. Each season MATIERE NOIRE tries to collaborate with different ‘’artist’’ in order to use different process to create unique pieces. MATIERE NOIRE is french for ‘’dark matter’’: the mysterious matter, which theoretically accounts for a large part of the total mass of the universe that appears to be missing.

Cécile Raizonville was born in the South of France. She graduated with a degree in industrial design and fashion from Felicidad Duce Institute of Barcelona. In 2006, she won the Lupo Award presented by Modafad, the spanish platform for emerging designers. She then continued her training at the house of Haute Couture Josep Font in Barcelona as well at Maxime Simoens in Paris. After completing her training, Cécile decided to venture to New York City to intern for the ecofriendly brand Bodkin. In 2012, she made the decision to move to Montreal and felt like it was the perfect place to work on a project of her own: This is how Matière Noire was born. Her curiosity and interest for other cultures are the core of her brand. In 2013, Matière Noire has been awarded the Mercedes-Benz start-Up award.
