Originally born and raised on the Caribbean island Curacao, after which I moved to Europe and studied at the fashion department of the Royal Academy of fine arts Antwerp. While studying there my love grew for the Caribbean culture and lifestyle, which is now tightly woven into my aesthetics.

Creativity is something I grew up with on Curacao. I learned from a young age to utilize what I had and whatever I could find. I created toys, clothing, accessories from bits and pieces that were thrown away. The ‘new’ was only limited by my own mind. This has been till this day the way that I approach art and clothing. If the world ever ended, what would come of us? Would fashion just cease to exist or would this be the start of a new chapter? This is a question that MARTHA’s The Future is Black tried to answer.

MARTHA imagines a future where the sole survivor, a black woman reconnects with her tribal heritage to look for ways to rebuild and reconstruct what is leftover from the world. In this process she finds a deeper connection with the organic. The fields, once only used and abused, become one with the sole survivor. Her offspring are formed from dust and take just after her, kind yet strong, energetic yet gentle, youthful yet knowledgeable.

In the old world the colorful plastic elements ended up in landfills where they survived more then a hundred years. Now they have been given a new life and form a template for a new interpretation.
