Finalist at the 37th international festival of fashion, photography and accessories of Hyères at the Villa Noailles and recently exhibited at the Centre d'Art Contemporain de Genève (CAC), Louise Leï Wang, based in Geneva, is a jewellery and accessories creator. Graduate of HEAD – Geneva and CFP Arts, she is interested in the inherent qualities–such as texture, density, and malleability–of any material and likes to manipulate these in innovative ways, transforming materials to extreme limits. Sensitive to the issues of sustainability and ethical design, these notions are often integrate in her creations.

Louise Leï is inspired by dreams, the unconscious and the power of the imagination. She has kept in touch with her inner child, and allows herself to follow an intuition, a feeling, or a desire. This has brought about her most organic and poetic creations, as in her "Birth of a dream" collection, which playful bends the borders between sculpture, artwork, and jewellery. On the other hand, she is passionate about minimalist, pure, and direct designs. Her "FOLDS" collection showcases more geometrical, graphic, and rational shapes: each piece is the result of a struggle towards simplicity. Louise Leï transforms an individual cut into several sizeably different volumes. The shape of the module itself becomes the main element of the jewel.

For her, jewellery is a way of combining art, creation, design, history, craftwork, and three-dimensional miniature sculpture work. Furthermore, jewellery pieces as singular objects, as they do not fit into a static space, but onto the human body, which is always in motion. It is through this interaction between body and object that they truly come alive. The personal identification that emerges from the relation of an individual to a particular piece of jewellery or accessory, and the effect they provoke on the wearer, is of great interest to Louise Leï. In her continued exploration of ever more complex and personalized ideas, she likes to convey a subtle, immaterial quality, a little extra soul to her creations: an added impression, sensation or message.

Lastly, Louise Leï is a music buff, trained pianist, collector of sounds and making mixtape: music plays an essential role in her everyday life.

FOLDS Jewellery collection

Centred around the cutting and folding of a metal plate, FOLDS is a collection conceived to be produced without any loss of material. It emerges from the transition of 2D to 3D, thanks to the manual abilities of the artist-jeweller, who transforms an individual cut into several sizeably different volumes. The pieces that make up this collection showcase a volumetry that is both atypical and sculptural, consisting of minimalist and graphic geometrical modules. The shape of the module itself becomes the main element of the jewel.

A powerful dialog between fullness and emptiness is also engaged, with great potential for variability. Each module is primarily presented on its own, underlining its pure and striking volume. Nonetheless, when the modules are repeated in a necklace, this creates a rhythm that is accentuated by the light reflecting onto the smooth surface of the metal, enticing us to explore the open and closed spaces, like a gasp of fresh air. A single jewel can contain various differing volumes, according to the viewer’s particular angle of vision.

The FOLDS collection combines manufacturing efficiency and expert Swiss craftwork. If during the cutting process the machine is used to its fullest potential, the folding process the principle of folding refers us to the essential hand of the artist which gives all the singularity and the sensitivity to this collection.

FOLDS offers an audacious and coherent artistic vision, mindful of the environmental implications of design in the present day and in the future.
