Having gone to two design schools in London. She began her studies at Istituto Marangoni. After two years her educational path changed by being accepted to transfer into second year at University of the Arts: London College of Fashion.

Her Final Major Project concentrates on creating something dramatic, she explores different techniques and really ventured into using the laser-cutting machine provided on the LCF curtain road campus with different fabrics, materials and designs. The collection creates pieces which hold special and fluctuant design elements, whilst still sticking to traditional tailoring, and being wearable. Emma kept the thought of movement whilst designing the collection, you see a lot of flare and volume through fabrics that hold a drape nicely and allow movement and motion when walking in the garments.

The FMP 'Contemporary Ophelia' was created to showcase Emma's vision as best as possible, with inspiration coming from Pre-Raphaelite paintings and a particularly dramatic scene in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', she wanted to show that garments and fashion could hold a similar feel by creating an emotional impact. Like Millais' 'Ophelia', something aesthetically beautiful to look at, and yet holding a dark and morbid essence and mood.

Contemporary Ophelia

My Final Major Project at London College of Fashion. Featured in the graduate LCFBA17 press show.

My collection began with my love for John Everetts Millais’ interpretation of Shakespeare’s ‘Ophelia’ drowning in a river (‘Ophelia’, 1851-52). The way in which this painting was something so beautiful aesthetically, and yet it portrayed a morbid scene of a ‘muddy death’. Because of this I felt so captivated to create a collection which gave a familiar feel and impact. Millais’ masterpiece spurred my intrigue into pre-Raphaelite painting and garment research into mid-late nineteenth century court dress for women and men.

For this collection I just wanted to create. It was my last project at university and all I wanted to achieve was my full potential. I had real enjoyment in designing and making this collection. When choosing the fabrics I used a lot georgette and organza because I liked their sheerness and the way they draped. When designing the dresses and outerwear I imagined the way they would move when the model walked. I wanted a lot of movement and drama. Therefore, through the silhouettes you do see a lot of flaring, length, and volume.
