It was when I was five. I was at a theater to see my father’s opera as usual and disappeared into a dressing room for hours. Memorized by numerous alluring and splendid outfits, props, hats, shoes and so on, I was touching and smelling them in my own paradise traveling through different times and places, where I ended up falling asleep on a ballerina tutu made of rough tulle materials.That was how Rome’s sunshine was. The vivid colors that are so splendid and strong, the air, exotic old stone houses and wood windows that became hardened after being repeatedly wet and dried, and the roads where all different vehicles ranging from wagons 2000 years ago to modern sedans have travelled through all blessed me to travel to different times on a daily basis when I was young.My hometown Busan. It is a popular resort area with an ocean of many different faces, including Haeundae beach and hills where I could walk up and down enjoying the salty smell and winds from the sea during its good days, as well as rainstorms and typhoons, which are fairly different from Italy’s strong colors.
I spent my adolescence experiencing the advanced modern city life of Korea: the hustle and bustle, sophisticated and slim buildings, people, and their tastes, which were certainly different from Rome. Being exposed to both cultures, I was able to combine a mixture of Asian and European styles naturally. The fact that I studied sculpture in college and studied abroad in Milano where I majored in set design was perhaps a destiny. Throughout my life both in Korea and Rome, I encountered opera, music, lighting, and literature on a daily basis.
In Italy, I enjoyed performances at La Scala theater, one of the world’s top three opera theaters and attended Aaccademia di Belle Arti di Brera di Milano (National College of Arts in Milano), which produced numerous stage artists. On my way to school, I was fascinated by numerous show windows with styles that were constantly changing and exhilarating, which served as a huge inspiration to my own styles. After the first IDM bracelet that I made received good feedback upon release, a man from the bracelet factory in Italy informed me that a design studioi was interested in me. It was a self-defining moment, which gave me an opportunity to explore all various styles of Dsquared2, Moncler, Mario Valentino, Trussardi, and Christopher Kane and design them in one place.
Currently, IDM bags are made of premium materials such as python and crocodile skins at the workshop of master craftsmen in Milano. Since they are manually and meticulously made by craftsmen who produced leading luxury bags and watches, the quality is one of the best in the world. It satisfies customers of all different tastes from classic and elegant to chic and urban; the main enthusiasts are creative professionals.
