‘Concrete Giants’ is a response to the Brutalist architecture movement of the 1970’s in the United Kingdom. The collection, my graduate project at Ravensbourne University in London, plays in the intrinsic architectural references of three iconic concrete buildings: Erno Goldfinger’s Trellick Tower overlooking Portobello Road, Neave Brown’s Alexandra Road Estate cutting through the fabric Camden and Russel Diplock’s Arlington Tower, sitting at the end of the pleasure promenade in Margate, Kent.
The collection is presented through 3D scans that superimpose the individual looks onto the three-dimensional fragmented spaces of the estates - amalgamating them into one quasi self contained brutalist universe.
Each look is incorporating recycled materials - leftovers of previous collections, remnants of past ideas - a rejected existence echoing the common conception of Brutalism.
The three looks are unified by a collection of footwear that on one hand appear to be rough and hard but as in fact cast is a soft foam allowing the wearer to hold into them and demonstrate a much softer side, an ever finer grain of Brutalism.
