That Was In Tents

That Was In Tents, explores summer camp and the structure of Girl Scouts as a microcosm of a potential society. This collection considers the materiality and physicality of camp through textile development and various traditionally feminine-coded handcrafts. The use of upcycled sleeping bags parallels the practice of queer reclamation. That Was In Tents also explores knot-tying, beading, friendship bracelets, and knitting as camp crafts which can generate fully fashioned garments and accessories when removed from their traditional pedagogies. This collection investigates historical Girl Scout uniforms and outdoor gear as examples of the desirable body in the time which generated them; relating these silhouettes to life today by reappropriating the frame of earlier uniforms, rendering them in technical fabrics with elasticated paneling, sculpted pleating, and drapery.
