Aksha was born out of a desire to create clothes that are distinctive, wearable and effortlessly stylish while working closely with skilled artisans in India. Aksha is the brainchild of Sridevi Ramaswamy, a self-taught fashion designer. Aksha marries Sridevi’s passion for traditional Indian fabric and craftsmanship with her love for modern silhouettes. In essence, Aksha offers exclusive, limited edition contemporary apparel made from luxurious cotton, linen and silk, with a subtle but unmistakable Indian touch.

Sridevi grew up in India, and custom-designed many of her own clothes growing up. Even as she spent over a decade in the information technology industry in India, USA and Singapore, Sridevi taught herself about fabric, design and craftsmanship, and ultimately launched Aksha in 2013.

Aksha means ‘eye’ in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, reflecting Sridevi’s vision to create eye-catching but understated clothes that showcase her eye for detail. Perhaps closer yet to Sridevi’s heart, Aksha is a portmanteau of her sons’ names.

Every collection from Aksha will explore one traditional craft in depth, and may draw inspiration from the life and culture of a part of India. We work with skilled artisans - weavers, dyers, embroiderers and printers - to tell a unique story that is rooted in the past while being stylishly contemporary.

Desert Waves

Desert Waves is inspired by the Kutch region in western India - an arid desert landscape that is the home to distinctive arts and crafts as well as a wide variety of flora and fauna. The collection has western silhouettes and styling, with distinctive prints and patterns drawing on motifs common to Kutch, such as the 'tree of life' and tattoos in geometric shapes.

The ‘stripes’ found in many dresses in the collection are in fact the result of handcrafted ‘tie and dye’ work in the ‘leheriya’ style (derived from the Hindi word ‘leher’ meaning waves), and are our way of representing the landscape of the region. The ‘leheriya’ style of ‘tie and dye’ work is native to the state of Rajasthan in western India.
