Milou van Esch(22) was born in Sittard, The Netherlands. She finished her Bachelors degree in Fashion Design at The Acedemy of Fine Arts and Design Maastricht in 2014. For her graduation collection “Rémagine” she was inspired by the refraction of light. While doing her research she discovered the artist Olafur Eliasson, an artist who works a lot with physical elements such as light. His artwork “Remagine” has become her main inspiration for her graduation collection. The artwork is a two-dimensional projection of light on a white wall, but it creates a three-dimensional illusion. This feeling she wanted to translate into her collection. The Artwork “Remagine” Of Olafur Eliasson, reminded her of abstract garments, so she cut out different shapes from images of this artwork and made several collages with them. With this technique she designed her whole collection. The colors of the collages consisted different shades of light, on which she also added gradient prints. These gradients are a reference to the light spectrums that arise when light is refracted. With her graduation collection “Remagine” she was selected for the Lichting Young Talent Award 2014.

Milou’s way of designing is quite abstract and aesthetic. Her inspirations are always original and authentic. To start a collection she likes to make collages on intuition with a sophisticated use of color and with strong, static silhouettes. In her designproces the making of collages is an important way to play with different compositions in a very graphic style. By patternmaking and toiles she translates her images into garments in a very contemporary way. She has a special affinity with dry and crispy materials, her love for poplins gives her collections a clean and pure atmosphere.
