Tanu Vasu produces hybrid forms of clothing equating artisanal practice with innovation in fabric. Tanu’s designs combine mutuality between ideological abstractions from bygone eras and subjective perceptions. Her design style is modeled on incorporating components of sculpture, innovative materials and traditional craftsmanship within her practice. Tanu has adopted fashion as an artistic expression by using visual language as a guide to lead the audience through her collections. Imagination yields authority within Tanu’s design practice, often provoking paradoxical relationships between elation and poignancy, modernity and antiquity. Tanu has achieves a distinct visual signature within her collections through taking ideas from a number of domains.
“I see fashion as a concentrated mode of individualism accompanied by desire, fashion provides a conduit to challenge the limitations of our aesthetic adjudications and social continuums, I intersect this tension through amplifying the ethereal notions with fragments of severity. Concepts of the perpetual are heightened into a distinct state, which bring about my compulsion to exalt historical ideas with the use of contemporary and traditional methods through generating ideas into specific shapes and patterns.
I often syncopate forms to draw a parallel with the base concept and redevelop this state to intensify the subjective awareness. Clothing is a medium through which I can deplete the human figure from its natural form by enhancing and regenerating contours. I often develop ideas through research of various historic, scientific, musical, geographic and literary notions.“
