Connie Diamantopoulos recently completed her final year studying a Bachelor of Design (Fashion) (Honours) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Design. Connie’s aesthetic has a strong presence of futuristic and edgy characteristics, with her constant use of unconventional materiality allowing her to establish her practice as a graduating designer.

Influenced mainly by the relationship between science and art, Connie takes inspiration from how to engage the garment wearer with it being worn on the body. With fabrication from previous collections ranging from heavy wool coatings to congealed gelatin, she allows for the fabrication to transform the interpretation of the individual through a manifestation of sensorial experiences.

-P.P.E-, Personal Protective Equipment, explores the notion of safety, security and protection within society. It is the intention to create sheltered environment for the garment wearer, taking elements of protective wear to re-contextualise the collection into the realm of subconscious awareness.

This perception of restriction is satisfied by contrasting harsh and plush fabrications, through the layering of weighted garments and accessories strapped over the human form. The hand quilted satin, ball bearing embedded hand punched leather and buckled seat-belts allow for the tactile interpretation to contrast the overall aesthetic of the collection.

It is only when these garments are worn that this level of security is found – creating a secret awareness unnoticeable through public display.
