Zhuoran Li is a textile and knitwear designer currently based in New York City. A recent graduate of the Parsons MFA Fashion Design and Society program, her work is driven by experimentation and innovation.

Obsessed with color, drawing and geometric shapes, she seeks to create knitwear that offers more possibilities exploring space and the body. Mood and environment are important elements of Zhouran’s design process, while drawing upon her industry knowledge and experience Zhouran aims to challenge traditional notions of knitwear and the capabilities of the knit structure.

BODY CANVAS

The body is a blank canvas. It’s a collection of self-expression and body appreciation. I began to draw “marks” on my body and then used transparent paper to trace the drawings. It’s a process to re-render my “marks” and treat my body as a blank canvas. It’s a self-reflection about the personal experience of my slow-paced walk. Also inspired by cubist paintings, I describe body parts as geometric shapes, challenging the development of silhouette with the most basic elements in an artwork. The softness and texture of the knit make the geometry and the body form an intimate relationship.
