Nowadays, people tend to care too much of what others’ think of themselves. The invention of all kinds of social media has created a contemporary cultural phenomenon. People seek for others’ approval by uploading their photos to promote themselves. In many statistics, it was recorded that many of the young people tend to spend more than 6 hours per week for taking selfie because it will generate more “likes”. Instead of showing their true self, they intend to present their “best self”, so others will agree and like them more.
The World Is Your Oyster Spring/Summer 2018 collection wish to bring out the care less attitude and be the true self. Fold details are used throughout the whole collection, such as shirts, blazer and pockets. The detail is inspired by people who had carelessly folded their clothes up on the street without aware of it. Crinkle fabric, pleated fabric as well as some jacquard fabric that creates an illusion of wrinkle effect have been selected in the collection. Details such as exposed facing, inner pockets; overlock stitching and extended lining suggest that the clothing have seems to be worn inside out to present a carefree attitude for the whole collection.
Slogans have been flipped horizontally in the collection; which can only be seen correctly through the mirror. Such as the YOU CAN’T PLEASE ALL tee and the CARE LESS fold tee; it acts as a conversation and a reminder to the wearer to be their true selves. CARE LESS care label has been applied to the clothes to create an ironic twist. Embroidery slogans such as “FACTUALIST” & “BEAT GENERATION” are included to express the sense of rejection of standard narrative values and pleasing others. By carrying a care less attitude, you can be your true self.
