My Gennext collection, ‘Maar and Moumoune’ is a tribute to Dora Maar, Pablo Picasso’s muse.The collection is heavily inspired from Picasso’s paintings of Dora Maar as an intense woman, depicting a melancholic and schizophrenic side. It was envisioned as my understanding of Dora Maar, a woman of greatness and misery.The fragmented artistry of Cubism has been incorporated in the form of shapes and structures achieved by collaging and juxtaposing different fabrics together, references of which can be drawn from the flamboyance of Dora’s attire in “Dora Maar au Chat”. Fabrics have also been manipulated into innovative pleats and folds. Sleeves and collars have been played around with. Surrealistic illustrations by Japanese artist, Naomi Kobayashi have been improvised into embroidery artworks, manipulating space thematically. The look highlights the essence of Maar as an eccentric woman, underlining the relevance of Picasso’s vicious cat, Moumoune in her life as a recluse.The fabrics used for the collection are cotton, knits, wool and felt.
