Dean Stephen Davies’ work is a response to social and political issues that are at the heart of contemporary culture, tackling issues such as gender inheritance, perception and societal pressures.

Davies believes that the idea should ultimately lead the practice and doesn’t restrict himself to one particular ‘Fashion’ field, working across ‘Design’, ‘Styling’ and ‘Photography’ based projects, working within one particular specialism at a once, or taking the creative helm over all three.

His photographic work seen him awarded the very first ‘Fashion Photography Award’ at the 2013 Graduate Fashion Week, where he also debuted pieces from his graduate collection on the University stands and in a collective Fashion Film of which he lead the Creative Direction.

Graduating from the University of the West of England in July 2013 with a First Class Honours in Fashion Communication, Davies was also awarded the Arnolfini Prize for Outstanding Performance and Excellence in Design.

Davies is currently the founding editor of online Fashion and Photography Website and Magazine, TRIP, Content Editor for Fashion-Visual Blog, F-Journals and as of October, a Student Learning Support Assistant for Fashion at the University of the West of England.

Heavy Burdens

“Heavy Burdens is the first physical collection from Designer and Photographer, Dean Stephen Davies.

Combining his unique concept-lead design aesthetic with garments that ultimately defy the need for comfort and ease of movement, Dean Stephen Davies turns pre-conceived notions of every-day attire on their head. Taking inspiration from the ‘female’ life-cycle, he examines crucial stages of a proposed woman’s life line and re-interprets them on the de-masculinised 'male' form, creating a juxtaposition and asexuality between the two predominant genders.

Heavy Burdens explores the idea of human dependence on the ‘other’, and how this can ultimately restrict our very movements. Davies draws from societal pressures regarding patterns of dependency existing within human relationships spanning youth, parenthood, marriage and maturity and family life, right through to old age and ultimately, death. These ideas are visualised through clothes that impractically require two people to wear them, side by side and front to front, through three matching garments that give the impression of a pregnant male and a large hunched coat, which physically ties the wearer from chest to shoes, creating an arched back with the impossibility to walk freely."
