Matteo is from Auronzo di Cadore in Northern Italy – his route onto MA Fashion Design and Technology Menswear was far from conventional having previously studied communication (BA) and philosophy and semiotic (MA)– but after working with the Borbonese Group designing a diffusion line of handbags he decided to come to London to take his design skills further.
His highly desirable and beautifully tailored collection fuses modern tailoring with traditional craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from his fascination for the small dots, lines and circles printed onto white paper that his Mother and sisters used to create crochet lace – he created patterns which were converted into pieces of crochet and put into panels of his sophisticated black and white collection. This complex technique of combining crochet into the luxurious menswear fabric creates a dichotomy between what is traditionally seen as male and female. The detailing of the pattern cutting, the sharp fit and the mixture of Italian manufacture, japanese fabrics, hand stitching and crochet (produced by close family members) makes his collection luxurious and desirable but also hugely personal and emotional.
Matteo won the price for the Best Collection of the Year awarded by the chairman of the British Fashion Council Harold Tillman.
Matteo’s collection will be available to order and a line of sunglasses and glasses is already available.
