In Africa throughout recorded history, a boy is a boy and a man is a man, they are different entities. A boy is with his mother. A man is with men and elders and does what men do. A boy becomes a man only through some form of strict initiation ritual.
Before he succeeds in his quest to become a man, he will fail, he will undergo many painful experiences, he will participate in ritual ceremonies which often involve pain and endurance. He leaves his mother and tribe behind and ventures forth to seek wisdom and his destiny as a man.
A rite of passage has been used as a way of initiating boys to men and elders since human existence. The aim of pathways to manhood is to bring out the potential in young men and have them full of inspiration as they look to the future.
ELDER SSI9 explores the ancient African rites of passage of making boys into men and it admires the courage of young boys who struggle and go through strict and painful experience in order to elevate and move more fluidly in life. Thus, this collection is aimed at clothing them to extinguish the initiate's old self to create a new identity for the man, leader and elder he will become. Minimalistic designs, aesthetic volumes and artisanal details all combine to give this collection an edge and to celebrate and glorify the new man and elder, make him feel grand and regal for completing his quest successfully.
