A graduate of the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1993, honed his skills as an assistant fashion designer for Voir, Playboy and Isetan. Along the way, he picked up several awards such as runner-up for the Malaysian Young Designer Award and second runner-up for the ASEAN Young designer Award in 1996. The following year he took the special prize for the Asian Young Designer Award in Japan.
Earning a reputation for creating luxury with an edge, as a Creative Director, he showcased high fashion mixed with street credibility resulting in sky-rocketing sales of ready-to-wear locally and abroad. The label became a favourite with its romantic, ultra-feminine personality and its infusion of youthful sexiness.
In 1999, he opened Clothier Creation that produced his own label Khoon Hooi, which now branches out in accessories.
