this collection aims to create a visual narrative of the social effects of colonization in native cultures around the world, focusing particularly in my own culture, the andes, as a starting and ending point of my research and inspiration. “qamkunapah” features fabrics composed of exclusively natural fibers to show the resilience, strength, and kind disposition these have from an organic standpoint in apparel and
accessories design.
through the use of different fiber finishes and processes, combined with an exploration of native, traditional, and classic contruction techniques, this collection aims to portray the effects of colonization through the evolution of materials first used in native and indigenous cultures around the world.
based mainly in anthropological research and literature, the inspiration of this collection starts in my hometown of la paz, bolivia, and travels into the african congo through the eyes and words of Joseph Conrad’s heart of darkness, and into indochina through my own travels and exploration as an outsider in a new culture.
