A recent Kingston Ba Fashion graduate, Joanna Leigh Norton creates fashion led sportswear influenced design with a focus on print. As someone keen to learn, she enjoys the process of pattern cutting. She creates simple functional garments with a strong focus on seams and colour. Her design is often influenced by classic and modern literature and themes presents within novels. Having interned at Sophie Hulme, she is excited by design and is very keen to learn. She also holds a strong interest in the business of fashion.

After the Future - Graduate Collection

“This distorted view of the past has powerful effects on how we imagine the future, teaching us that a future lead by ideals and visions doomed to totalitarian naivety and murderous entropy. Behind the nostalgic fixation on a lost future we never had works the belief that collective visions of a better future must now be equated with failed hopes and thwarted dreams”

The collection draws on the dystopias written about in fiction such as those portrayed in 1984, The Road and Brave New World. Brave New World actively encourages consumerism and the link between uniform and controlled states is broken, allowing for a looser interpretation. The use of drawstring allows loose, fashion led sportswear style clothing to be free and yet controlled by the drawstrings. Seams are added and removed as conventions are within these fictional dystopias. A mix of grey neutrals and pale colours is interrupted by the colour of the drawstrings while abstract prints reflect the uncertainty held for the future. Our hopes for the future are always clouded by the doubt that what sounds ideal and utopic will inevitably become a dystopia.
