My Favourite Piece: MyriamSOS Fine Jewellery

BUILDING A COLLECTION IS A VERY PERSONAL PROCESS FOR EACH AND EVERY DESIGNER—AND MANY ITEMS HAVE THEIR OWN STORY AND DEEPER MEANING. IN OUR SERIES, MY FAVOURITE PIECE, WE ASK DESIGNERS ABOUT A PARTICULAR ITEM IN THEIR COLLECTION, AIMING TO SHED LIGHT ON THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DESIGNERS AND THE CLOTHING THEY CRAFT. Today, NOT JUST A LABEL designer Myriam Soseilos from Myriamsos Fine Jewellery takes us behind a striking and personal piece crafted for a private client with an exceptional story.

Why did you choose this piece?

My design philosophy is quite different from other jewellery in the market because of its flexibility, adaptability, and modular nature. My avant-garde philosophy is combined with cutting-edge designs and handcrafted ornate creations. I seek to enhance the hectic lifestyle of today’s modern women with elegant, minimalist, and versatile pieces, empowering them to make fashion statements defined by style and an entirely unique nature.

Epitomizing my brand’s philosophy and approach is my award-winning Transformers Collection, which includes unique pieces with different capabilities, such as rings transforming from single to double finger rings or into pendants. Every collection that I design can be personalized in terms of materials to meet a customer's preferences and, of course, budget.

The rise in the macro-trend of personalization and customization is “surfacing” new “adjustments” in jewellery design—to engage customers with meaningful stories behind each piece. My distinctive approach to design extends to the bespoke work I am commissioned to design.

I have chosen to talk about this piece amongst everything else I have created to date because it was probably the most challenging, intriguing, and impressive example of our bespoke work.

This jewellery piece was born out of a very unique request by a private client. It is an accurate representation of the injured spine of a private client on a body chain. She was involved in a car accident a few years ago, badly injuring her spine and undergoing a slow and painful recovery. My inspiration was a spinal cord MRI scan that I couldn’t even read! My starting point, before I even commenced designing the piece, was to see a doctor. He had to explain in detail what my customer’s problem was and how our spinal cord is constructed. I needed to have a medical understanding of the spinal cord in order to create an identical miniature piece.

Explain the origins of the design. What were your initial inspirations?

The client was involved in a car accident a few years ago badly injuring her spine and undergoing a slow and painful recovery. Inspired by the excitement of the client and the challenge of being able to represent this journey in a unique piece, I worked with medical records, doctors, and MRI scans of the spinal cord to create a truly unique piece! The result: attached to a body chain, the pendant comprises of one spinal cord, ten spinal nerve roots, six discs and five vertebrae—proving that the human body is the best work of art.

''

Why did you choose the specific fabrics, patterns, colors?

The spinal chain measures 6 centimeters long and there is movement in each disc. We chose 18-karat gold and diamonds for its creation to ensure that the metal is strong enough to reveal every detail of the design without bending. We chose white gold as the main color of the piece and rose for the vertebrae. White diamonds are stone set all along the piece for a sparkly effect.

''

What is the story of this piece and how does it work to tell your collection's overall story?

The spine body chain is not part of a MyriamSOS collection, but rather a bespoke piece that I was commissioned to design. It does reflect, however, my overarching philosophy and innovative approach to design.

While the jewellery world shows no lack of avant-garde designs, modern sculptural pieces are a little harder to find in the realms of fine jewellery. Armed with a directional aesthetic that treads the line between art and design, I have taken just that tack through my various collections.

All the collections I design are suggestive of an architectural discipline playing with minimalism, space, and movement until the clean geometric lines and the dynamic curvatures are refined into powerful constructions.

I call myself the "forget about the rules” jewellery designer, and I repeatedly challenge the wearer with jewellery that needs to be seen on a body to make sense. The spine body chain demonstrates my fearless and distinctively playful design universe and gives the true essence of my coolness as a designer. This visually compelling piece is a definite look into my design world and encapsulates contemporary opulence.
