Gerrit Rietveld Academie
Fashion at the Rietveld is about an open minded and experimental approach. We embrace fashion in its various body related contexts, seek its boundaries and make it our business to venture beyond. We provide education which enables you to develop into an independent designer, both tuned into the contemporary and the visionary. Our mandatory curriculum focuses on your design vocabulary on all levels. e.g. theory, communication, creativity, technical skill and visualisation. It prepares you to pursue a career in fashion within a context suitable for your individual talent and interest. After your graduation you may use the title Bachelor of Art & Design (BA)).
Courses Overview: Undergraduate and Graduate
Fashion Design, Experimental Design, Research and concept development, Textile design: both manual and digital method.
Knitwear design. Realisation: classical and experimental techniques, Pattern drawing, Moulding and draping, Sewing techniques Machine knitting techniques incl. CAD CAM. Printing techniques, 2D visual communication / presentation, Fashion drawing, Model drawing, Technical drawing: both manual and digital method. The Sandberg Instituut is the postgraduate department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam. It offers Master’s programmes in Fine Arts (MFA), Interior Architecture (MIA), Applied Art (MAA) and Design (MDes). The institute was established in 1990 by former Rietveld director, Simon den Hartog, and was originally concerned with such activities as organising seminars and exhibitions. It was its first director, Jos Houweling, who developed the Sandberg Instituut into a fully recognised educational institution with several Master’s programmes.
Life in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital city and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Fashion brands like G-star, Gsus, BlueBlood, PICHICHI, Iris van Herpen, 10 feet and Warmenhoven & Venderbos, and fashion designers like Mart Visser, Viktor & Rolf, Sheila de Vries, Marlies Dekkers and Frans Molenaar are based in Amsterdam. Modelling agencies Elite Models, Touche models and Tony Jones have opened branches in Amsterdam. Fashion models like Yfke Sturm, Doutzen Kroes and Kim Noorda started their careers in Amsterdam. Amsterdam has its garment centre in the World Fashion Center. Buildings which formerly housed brothels in the red light district have been converted to ateliers for young fashion designers, AKA eagle fuel.[citation needed] Fashion photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin were born in Amsterdam(Netherland).
