Marthe Næstby started Studio Fintfolk as a tribute to eccentric people, and her work is a celebration of individuality. During her MA studies at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, she developed her own design philosophy that questions the values of the different materials and the social or personal meaning of them. Quality and sustainability comes first and she always search for existing resources in her own surroundings before buying new materials for her design projects.
Her MA project "Fintfolk" was a conceptual fashion project about design in relation to people and their individual wardrobes - in a life perspective. The terms and the concept of a fashion collection was redefined from being a range of outfits designed for a season, to be seen as a collection of clothes that relate to a persons style, attitude and personal values. The designers role in this case was to create relations between textile and user, and to raise the values of the whole wardrobe by both; making new designs and redesigning/transformation of existing garments.
The project focuses on critical issues as freedom, identity, conventions, rituals, consumption, materials, production and product.
