"WE BELIEVE THAT THROUGH CURIOSITY, COMPASSION, AND HUMILITY, WE CAN USE FASHION TO CHANGE THE WORLD." - TAMARA KRANTZBERG, Indie Gen CEO/Designer
In search for a more meaningful and enriched perspective of fashion design, Indie Gen designer, Tamara Krantzberg, sought out to learn first-hand from textile artisans around the world. She travelled to New York, London, and Turkey, learning natural dyeing in Kyoto and Ohara, and the Batik technique from the Balinese, only to find that the answers to all of her questions were in her own backyard. Upon returning home to Mexico, Krantzberg took a road trip to Yucatan where she met Fidelia, a devoted matriarch and talented artisan born to a long lineage of Yucatan cross-stitch embroiderers.

Over the years, Tamara has grown close and connected to Fidelia and her family, admiring her as a fearless leader and partner— a lover of life and a woman of integrity who is dedicated to her craft and takes pride in her culture. Fidelia and the artisans are a testament to the power of collaboration. Through the mutual exchange of knowledge, stories, skills, and techniques, Tamara and the artisans have joined two unique perspectives to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Through the formation of relationships that are both professional, personal and creative, Krantzberg has felt no other choice but to embrace both the Yucatan cross-stitch technique and its people.

In partnership with the Yucatan artisans, Indie Gen was conceived on this idea of collaboration. Their successes led Krantzberg to expand to Oaxaca where she learned Natural Dyeing with Indigo and then to Los Altos de Chiapas, where she worked together with various communities including Zinacantan, Chenalho, Chamula, Aldama, San Andres Larrainzar and San Cristobal de Las Casas. Over the years, Indie Gen has built its identity upon merging innovative design with the rich history and technique, positioning Mexican textile culture within the global fashion and art landscape while giving indigenous communities a means for economic, intellectual, and individual growth.

Each Indie Gen jacket is a collectible art piece, personally and carefully crafted and packaged as a wearable token of Mexican art and culture. With each jacket comes a unique Serial Number, Certificate of Authenticity, and Original Spec Sheet, allowing collectors to know exactly where each textile is from and how it is made.

Indie Gen understands the importance of integrity. We aspire to be on of the few fashion companies to achieve equal success and impact for all collaborators and parties involved. In addition to providing fair trade, our mission is to invest our profits in developing our neighboring communities by providing them with new materials and conducting seminars and workshops in quality control, leadership & empowerment, and experimental fashion design.
