Born in Salzburg, Edwina Hörl was the winner of the very first Austrian fashion award for experimental fashion design by the Austrian Ministry of Cultural Affairs in 1990. Self-taught as a fashion designer (she holds a Master’s degree in special-needs education), Edwina Hörl worked for Yohji Yamamoto in Tokyo from 1991 to 1993 before launching her eponymous unisex label in Vienna in 1996. In 2000 she moved her studio to Tokyo where she currently lives and works. Hörl creates fashion collections on a specific theme twice a year. Themes include namida – a dedication to the people who suffered hardship as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, fkk– a collection on free body culture and the absence of clothes, kiki/krise/crisis – performed as a public demonstration, mimi – a collection on migration and mobility, hadaka no oosama – a reflection on textile structure and visibility in fashion and the trial to transform the symbolic term of 無/mu/nothing into fashion. Working together with graphic design studio so+ba (Alex Sonderegger and Susanna Baer) since 2004, they have created artistic projects around complex conceptual collections, with themes drawn from discussions about different cultures and societies, reflections on her own cultural identity, as well as sociopolitical discourses. Intertwined with her design process, this approach offers a strong message on what fashion is able to discuss, provoke and disrupt. Short essays from different authors accompany each collection to encourage deeper reflection upon the theme. Besides her artistic approach, a further key element is Edwina Hörl’s philosophy on fashion design and craftsmanship. Her insistence on high quality materials and workmanship comes with the constant search for the perfect fit. It is not only about developing contemporary shapes and silhouettes, but also about always optimizing a pleasant-to-wear sensation, which is unobtrusive yet strongly influenced by the specific mood of each collection. Edwina Hörl’s multidisciplinary work includes exhibitions at international cultural institutions as well as collaborations with artists from various disciplines. Edwina Hörl’s collections evolve with the help of her team. She has been teaching Textile Arts at the Department of Fashion and Styles at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 2008 - 2014. The current collection しゃわせ / zum glück, spring summer 2020, is available in Japan and South Korea.
