Saint Louis Fashion Incubator Designer Call-Out

The Saint Louis Fashion Incubator, a new project spearheaded by the Saint Louis Fashion Fund and led by Eric Johnson - former New York City Economic Development Corporation’s vice president for fashion & arts where he oversaw $20 million in retail initiatives and helped rebuild NYC’s manufacturing industry – is now accepting applications for its inaugural class of designers.

The two-year residency program kicks off January 1, 2017 and will provide six emerging designers, recruited from across the country, with free work/studio space, financial support, best-in-class business curriculum, mentorship from a local and national advisory council, and top-line sales opportunities in major markets. In addition, designers will receive business support from Washington University’s Olin Business School as well as access to key regional and national partnerships and linkages in the industry.

The selected designers will also have an opportunity to become part of a bigger mission: to bring the business of fashion back to St. Louis and to help revitalize the former garment district in downtown Saint Louis, which was once a robust and vibrant manufacturing center.

The light-filled 7,500-square-foot incubator space will be located in St. Louis’ historic garment district in the Art Loft building at 1533 Washington Avenue. The program will provide the selected designers with the following:

Free studio space/designer offices housed in a historic 7,500-square- foot light-filled building in St. Louis’ historic fashion corridor. The space will also include: shared work space, retail, education space, state-of-the-art equipment, and access to small run sampling and manufacturing

Stipend to offset the cost of relocation, travel, supplies, etc. and to be used at the designer’s discretion

Mentorship and business support leveraging key industry connections and partnerships as well as a nationally recognized advisory board

Sales opportunities via trunk shows, pop-up shops, e-commerce and market week opportunities in major markets

Collaborative opportunities via introductions to St. Louis based businesses, manufacturing firms, retailers and tech start-ups to world class arts and culture organizations, and higher education institutions. SLFI designers will become an integral part of the thriving cultural ecosystem in St. Louis

Professional development through partnerships with Washington University’s Olin School of Business and Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, and a network of local and national partners. SLFI designers will benefit from two years of intense business, fashion, merchandising and retail programming as well as guest speakers, workshops, and panels
