Autonomous meaning - Independent, free or self ruling.
The Autonomous Collections is a London based brand taking an ethical approach
to fabrication and design. The brand offers a bold aesthetic that is wearable and considered.
Founder and Designer at The Autonomous Collections, Kim Stevenson is from Geelong, Australia.
Her experiences of extreme weather and global warming growing up have led her to create her own
brand with a thoughtful ideal.
The inspiration Stevenson uses throughout her designs are the combination of rural meets
city life. Nature Vs Man is a constant inspiration for her and likes to produce
work that represents the value of handcraft, but also aesthetically appeals to exciting new
directions in style and youth culture.
‘Living in such a diverse, multicultural city allows me to combine different cultures throughout
my designs and to be able to design for a wider group of people. I hope to do this by looking at
techniques common in indigenous people through out the world, combine this with a city environment
and make those techniques fresh, exciting and new. It is important to me to find the fine line of
creativity and wearable at the same time.' Kim Stevenson.
Finishing with a First in Fashion Design at the University of East London, she went on to showcase
her first collection at Graduate Fashion Week.
Her collection was a success which generated a lot of media attention. From an editorial
in the Guardian Newspaper to magazine interests, blogs, websites and photographers.
Since then Stevenson has won a series of awards from Fashion Scouts, One's to watch award, Ethical Fashion Forum's Top brand Pics, Haberdashers' Business Funding award and has also been awarded funding to run Sustainable Fashion Workshops in her borough.
Most recently The Autonomous Collections has just released their brand new collection ‘The Autonomous Blue Prints’.
The Autonomous Blue Prints captures a story of creativity in the culture of music and art. Each print created has its own number and characteristic meaning no garment will ever be the same.
The Brand is pushing the notion of Sustainability in Denim production to the next level. The denim pieces are expressive, artistic and unique. These are all made from factory scraps.
Organic cotton and Bamboo fabrication compliments the recycled Denim to produce a series of shirts, shirt dresses, jumpsuits, trousers and jackets that are unisex in their approach and timeless in their design.
“Our process defines our garments, that’s why each appliqued garment will be numbered and will be different to the next. Offering our customers a bespoke product that has been responsibly produced”
Kim Stevenson – Creative Director/Founder
Stevenson is an example of a designer who is conscious of a customer and conscious of a responsibility to create with an environment in mind, whilst never compromising on the expression of creativity.
