London born and based, Sri Lankan designer Amesh Wijesekera is a graduate of the Academy of design Sri Lanka. First discovered at the Mercedes Benz fashion runways in Colombo he was selected to showcase at the prestigious international catwalk competition at Graduate fashion week 2016 judged by Italian vogue where he was chosen as the winner. In 2015 he was awarded at the Mercedes Benz fashion and apparel awards in Sri Lanka.
Amesh has apprenticed in the studios of the Future laboratory London, Edeline Lee and dame Zandra Rhodes.
Thereafter Amesh was given the prestigious opportunity to be the opening designer of Mercedes Benz fashion week Berlin supported by the “Mercedes Benz fashion talents” programme: highlighting local craft, contemporary design and “made in Sri Lanka” to a global audience.
Amesh was shortlisted for the "International fashion showcase 2019" in London. This platform is an integral part of London Fashion week giving “16 of the world’s best emerging fashion designers” the opportunity to showcase at London in partnership with the British Fashion Council, British Council, London College of fashion and Somerset house.
His love for textiles and color is stretched beyond paper as Amesh constantly works alongside the skilled craftsman and women across the island including artisan communities of knitwear, crochet, and handloom.
The shared knowledge of fine craftsmanship and design innovation is vital for such industries to move forward enabling social sustainable growth states Amesh.
