Amber Nifong is an NYC based fashion designer who would describe her style as "Haute Macabre." Her aesthetic is one of high fashion with an emphasis on dark imagery, ideas derived from the occult, and macabre themes, but all with a romantic twist. She constantly uses juxtaposition in her designs - from opposing ideas/imagery, to contrasting structures in her garments. Her focus is on twisting known concepts of art and fashion into unexplored and unique creations in her work. Amber firmly believes that great design comes from constant research, learning, and trial and error. She strives to be a constant pupil of the world around her and feels the procuring of skills and knowledge is an inexhaustible goal for her life.
Ange Déchu is based on this general concept of darkness. Not as in subjects that are creepy or evil, but darkness in a way that can be even more terrifying - pain, inner demons, struggle, and evil that lies within all of humanity. For this collection I wanted to take a deeper look into that darkness - something that most choose to avoid, much less embrace. I personally feel that society as a whole tends to ignore the things that aren't "pretty". Most of us don't like to broach painful topics or experiences. Overall, I think that people want to look at what is nice, what is acceptable for polite company, and ignore the dark dirty grit of humanity. That's what this collection is all about. Instead of averting my eyes from darkness, I decided to explore its depths. The name of the collection, which means “fallen angel” in French, was inspired from biblical texts regarding fallen angels after they had been cast out of heaven. Lucifer - the highest of the angels, even after the fall, was still supposed to be the most beautiful of all the angels in the heavens. It was this dichotomy that is at the heart of the collection - that even dark things can be beautiful. Thus the collection is a mix of hard and soft, edgy and elegant - mixing macabre themes with opulence that ultimately culminate into exquisite couture pieces.
