My Gennext collection, ‘Maar and Moumoune’ is a tribute to Dora Maar, Pablo Picasso’s muse. The collection is heavily inspired from Picasso’s paintings of Dora Maar as an intense woman, depicting a melancholic and schizophrenic side. It was envisioned as my understanding of Dora Maar, a woman of greatness and misery. The fragmented artistry of Cubism has been incorporated in the form of shapes and structures achieved by collaging and juxtaposing different fabrics together, references of which can be drawn from the flamboyance of Dora’s attire in “Dora Maar au Chat”. Fabrics have also been manipulated into innovative pleats and folds. Sleeves and collars have been played around with. Surrealistic illustrations by Japanese artist, Naomi Kobayashi have been improvised into embroidery artworks, manipulating space thematically. The look highlights the essence of Maar as an eccentric woman, underlining the relevance of Picasso’s vicious cat, Moumoune in her life as a recluse. The fabrics used for the collection are cotton, knits, wool and felt.

Urmi is based in Kolkata, India. She studied at National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata, India and graduated in 2009. Her collections are produced in India.

Urmi is an alumnus of NIFT (Kolkata) and passed out in 2009 with a BA in Fashion Design.
Label Urmi Ghosh was launched in 2011 with the idea of creating alternative and urban clothing for women. It aims at accomplishing a harmonious confluence between naturalism and avant-gardism. Transforming a nascent concept into wearable form, drawing inspiration from myriad cultures and art forms, is the basic ideology. Lines and shapes have predominated my design postulates since childhood. Discovering newer silhouettes and exploring creative patterns that incorporate volume, structure and drape in a garment embody the rudimentary design philosophy. Every ensemble is experimentally detailed and expertly finished adhering to quality standards and progressive artistry. On the context of surface development, I like creating textures, prints and embroidery, manipulating space and form thematically.
