Light Ocean Maxi Dress

For her Spring/Summer 2013 collection, Ocean Noir, Carly Hunter explores the dark side of the ocean and the ocean at night. Hunter sourced a ton of visual references for the collection; from Hiroshi Sugimoto’s ‘seascapes’ photography and German stock imagery of microscopic beach sand and ilmenite, to psychedelic Youtube videos of optical mineralogy and deep sea documentaries. The designer has created beautiful mirrored prints on both silks and denim using microscopic images of minerals found in beach sands from all over the world, resulting in a concrete lace effect. A loose, nautical vibe also runs through the collection, with wide elastic being used to create gathers and folds resembling wave patterns and cleverly cut dresses creating enveloping shell shapes. The other element is the use of lurex in some of the silk and linen fabrications inspired by the further study of light reflections on water and rocks.
