About the Designer
Romina is based in London, United Kingdom. She studied at Central St Martins. Her collections are produced in United Kingdom.
After graduating from the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design with a post graduate degree in innovative pattern cutting, Athens-born Romina Karamanea (32) worked with leading designers such as
Clements Ribeiro, Robert Cary-Williams, and Preen before launching her brand on September 2008.
Prior to officially launching the brand, Romina created capsule collections that impressed style icons like Isabella Blow, Franca Sozanni and Cameron Silver who commissioned her work and gave great praise for her unique and experimental approach. The entire first capsule collection was bought by the Mecca for discovering new talent - Savile Row’s designer boutique, B-store.
Romina Karamanea has produced 4 luxury R-T-W collections since, which have been showcased during London Fashion Week Off-schedule.
In summer 2009 Romina was short-listed from 1245 designers and selected as one of the final ten to present to a panel comprising some of the industries most influential people from Colin McDowell to Donatella Versace.
Structure and texture are central in Romina's work and she is known for her innovative cutting techniques and a Bauhaus aesthetic, inspired by her love of architecture, costume and human anatomy. Her garments are highly seductive with an inspired mix of sensual fabrics and strict lines, redefining geometry and shape. The silhouettes are partly fluid, partly structured with fine detail that aspire to a timeless quality. Romina says: “We want our pieces to be loved and worn forever, even getting better with age, like our wearer!”
Romina has recently created installations for a collaboration project with the V&A Museum archive and Liberty fabrics: Quilts 1700-2010
The brand has also been featured in 3 international design books that cover contemporary design, such as 100 NEW DESIGNERS by Lawrence King.
Romina and her team have produced 3 fashion films to date one of which was requested by the ground - breaking fashion photographer Nick Knight, (www.SHOWSTUDIO.com) for his project FUTURE TENSE and it encapsulates the brand’s aesthetic.
Shingai of the Noizettes regularly wears commissioned pieces when performing, Rankin recently photographed Kelis in some of Romina's latest designs while Amelle from SugaBabes wore a Romina Karamanea outfit at the Brit Music Awards.
The brand has been featured in several prestigious publications including Vogue, Financial Times, LA Times, Dazed, Marie Claire, WWD, Grazia, Vs, Surface and L’Officiel, to name a few highlights.
