Inspired by the wise minimalism as well as the imaginative adornment in nature’s forms and patterns Myrto Stamou creates her spring summer 2012 collection with a mood to explore several natural shapes in nature itself as well as through the artists’ eye. Discovering the work of two different photographers the designer looks at the symbolism that a natural object can burry according to photographer Olivia Parker while she also explores the intimate connection between nature and the human body as seen by Ann Brigman. Female arms blending with the boughs of old trees or representing the leaves’ moves in the blow of a strong wind drove the designer into intricate leather detailing and draped chiffon that draws inspiration from the anthropocentric vision of photographer Ann Brigman. What additionally inspires the core of the collection is the actual shape of leaves and flowers as seen in the work of Olivia Parker. The designer uses panels of leather to depict the leaves and petals and applies them on skirts, sleeves and hems in order to finally blend them with the softness of draped silk jersey and silk chiffon. The colours, white, pale grey and pale skin come from the minimal shades depicted on the photographers’ work which here serves to highlight the strong shapes and forms of the collection. The materials, satin cotton, pure silk and leather are chosen to complement this hymn to nature, while subtle transparencies fulfil the designer’s wish to highlight the beauty of everything that is plain and primary , in this case nature’s most wise structure, the human body.

Myrto is based in London, United Kingdom. She studied at UCA and graduated in 2009.

Attracted to anything creative since her early childhood in Greece, love for fashion came naturally as it embodied an appreciation of natural beauty, sophisticated aesthetics and artistic sensitivity. Having a natural inclination to art, combined with a fresh approach to design, Myrto Stamou sees fashion as a way to express inner thoughts, exquisite ideas and the need for creativity.
Myrto Stamou graduated from the University for the Creative Arts (Rochester, UK) in 2009 with her graduate collection winning the most prestigious award for fashion graduates around the UK, seen as a golden ticket to success in the fashion industry. Winning the overall Gold Award and Best Womenswear accolade at Graduate Fashion Week 2009 led to high-profile media attention and catwalk shows, including Iceland Fashion Week where she was one of a select group of foreign designers.
She would later spend several months in London working with acclaimed British designer, Hannah Marshall, before heading back to her native Greece to establish her own fashion label. While in Greece, Stamou received a nomination for the Innovation Award at the UK Performance Awards 2010 and also collaborated with top UK High Street retailer, River Island, to produce two items inspired by her Graduate Fashion Week winning collection. The dresses entered the brand’s stores in summer 2010 and are available worldwide via their online shop.
Wishing to further develop her design identity she moved to Athens in 2010 where she created the luxury womenswear brand Myrto Stamou which she ran for two seasons AW 2011-12 and SS 2012. Myrto Stamou has recently closed her label and has relocated to London looking to continue with her career in fashion .
