About the Designer
Jamie is based in San Francisco, United States. She studied at Life.
Based in San Francisco, KAYU makes handcrafted accessories that stand out in the mass-produced marketplace. For us it all starts with conscious creation. We are conscious of using materials that lessen the impact to the earth, engaging artisans and giving back to the community.
OUR MATERIALS
We design products that seek to lessen the impact we place on the earth's limited resources. This means using natural, renewable materials that are produced in a sustainable manner. Our products are made from bamboo, a fast-growing grass that replenishes itself in just three years. We also use buntal an abundant type of straw that comes from a palm and shell that is sustainably sourced. For our Resort 2012 collection we incorporated wood from the acacia tree, an invasive and fast-growing plant.
OUR ARTISANS
A bamboo artisan in China, a shell-crafter in Cebu, a T'boli weaver in the Southern Philippines - our products are handcrafted by artisans using techniques that have been passed down through the generations, and seek to preserve and promote indigenous craft and culture.
OUR CONTRIBUTIONS
A portion of every sale is donated towards healthcare and education in the developing world. We work with the non-profit Unite for Sight to provide sight-restoring surgeries to men and women in India. We also make donations to the organization Awareness Cambodia to purchase backpacks and school supplies for students in rural Cambodia.
