In its second month THE SHOP will be hosted and curated by Diane Pernet, the editor of cult-favourite blog, A Shaded View On Fashion and talent scout for the Festival D’ Hyeres. We asked her about her past, present and future in the fashion industry:
Like Josephine Baker, I have two loves, Fashion and Film. I have a degree in filmmaking and communications from Temple University and did additional studies at Parsons and FIT. After 9 months I launched my own brand, I’d never worked for anyone and basically grew up in public. My brand, Diane Pernet, lasted 13 years until I abandoned it and moved to Paris in the end of 1990. My first job in Paris was as a costume designer for Amos Gitae’s film Golem l’esprit de Exile. The highlight was meeting and working with lighting director Henri Alekan, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s fetish actress Hanna Schygulla.
Disenchanted with costume designing I then worked for CBC as an assistant to the producer on Fashion Files before taking a position as Fashion Editor for Joyce Ma’s magazine, Joyce. I was her entire Paris office for 4 1/2 years. Following that I got into the Internet where I worked for Elle.com, I had a column there called Dr. Diane. After Elle.com I moved to Vogueparis.com before launching A Shaded View on Fashion in February 2005. I am the founder of A Shaded View on Fashion Film Festival, a festival of short films and videos from around the world exploring themes of fashion, beauty and style. The first edition of ASVOFF was launched on September 26, 27 & 28th at the national museum in Paris, the Jeu de Paume it then travelled to Seoul, Guggenheim Bilbo, Riga, Mexico City, Hyeres, Tokyo, Rome, London, Vienna, Arnhem Biennale and in July, Dubrovnik.
In addition to being the founder of ASVOFF & ASVOF, I am a talent scout for the Festival d’Hyeres, make documentary films, and am a consultant for Milan’s White Club and the co-editor in chief of ZOO Magazine.
The second edition of ASVOFF will be launched with a Carte Blanche October 8th at Centre Pompidou. Our prestigious jury includes: Rick Owens, Nan Goldin, Maria de Medeiros, Eric Troncy, Laurent Goumarre, France Culture, Eric Tong Cuong, les Chose, Helene Segol, Wanda Productions and Nathalie Collin, creative director of Swarovski.
WHY FASHION... It was what I used to dream about as a little kid. I’ve kind of gone full circle, filmmaking, photography, fashion, fashion film festival.
EMERGING TALENT... Having been a designer for 13 years, I know how much independent talent needs support and beyond that, they are the future.
RECESSION OR OPPORTUNITY... Hopefully it will filter out some fashion pollution.
ONLINE VS. OFFLINE... Clearly on line.
I GOT WHERE I AM... By doing what gives me pleasure.
CREATIVITY COMES FROM… Instinct.
THERE'S A NEW... EC 1, cultural centre coming in 2015 in Lodz, Poland where David Lynch will have a film production and set up film workshops for young directors, how amazing is that?
BLACK… Strength and elegance.
BEING A “PERSONA” BECAUSE… I don’t think it is a choice you make, you just are…or you are not.
