Georgia Hardinge’s transient early life and international background gave her much opportunity to travel and develop her fascination with design. Born in London to the late French/Canadian Lord Nick Hardinge and German born Baroness Florence von Oppenheim, Georgia’s signature style achieves the rare quality of being both distinctive and wearable.
Hardinge has delivered three collections under her distinctive label. September 2009 saw her launch her debut collection with the help of independent fashion showcase ON|OFF with whom she exhibited at the Strand. The following season, she exhibited her AW2010 Collection,“CAGE”, which was subtly oriented around the concept of bondage, restraint and entrapment, with the BFC in Somerset House alongside her first promotional fashion film in collaboration with Sarah Piantadosi, Romain Choay and Roman Rappak. The piece consisted of imagery of self-conflict, featuring a model battling with herself - torn between a sadistic enjoyment of restraint and the freedom of limitless creativity. Hardinge’s debut catwalk collection entitled ‘La Belle et la Bete’ was sponsored by the prestigious fashion platform Vauxhall Fashion Scout. This much anticipated collection combines ideas from French Baroque and romanticism through to early punk and takes inspiration from the surrealism and mystique of the narrative style of Jean Cocteau.
This innovative young designer’s inspiration for design comes from a passion for architectural shapes and sculpture, which can be seen throughout her work, forming landscape shapes to uniquely accentuate and flatter the female silhouette. Fashion is Georgia’s way of moulding design techniques to create an art piece of lasting purpose.
Graduating from Parsons Paris School of Art and Design in 2008, Hardinge was awarded ‘the Golden Thimble’ for best designer for her graduate collection. She was recognized for creating highly technical and structural pieces which showed her creativity for contemporary design. Continuing her success, Samsung then went on to choose her to create a one-off collection for their commercial which was aired worldwide.
After a return to London in early 2009, Hardinge set up her fashion label. Subsequently, in July of that year, she was chosen to take part in All Walks Beyond The Catwalk, a project that was set up by Caryn Franklin and Erin O'Connor to challenge the expectations of ready-to-wear imagery by showcasing a variety of age, shape and sizes of model. The catwalk event shown at London Fashion Week also included designers Mark Fast, Hannah Marshall and David Koma and was hosted by Britain’s first lady Sarah Brown.
Since its foundation, the Georgia Hardinge brand has been moving at a decidedly fast and ever-increasing rate. 2010 proved to be an incredibly exciting year; the label’s debut London Fashion Week catwalk show being sponsored by Vauxhall Fashion Scout, being commissioned by L’Oreal to make six AW2010 ‘Cage’ dresses for their Colour Trophy Grand Final Show as well as receiving sponsorship from Swarovski to work closely with Charlotte Stockdale on three pieces for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this November. One particularly media-favourite showpiece of Hardinge’s SS2010 Collection was also used in Harrod’s Boodles Fine Jewellery campaign.
Fashion is for Georgia a means to manipulate design to create artistic pieces that have longevity, beauty and are of course wearable. She believes that "the highest approach of Art awareness is through Fashion".
