Staying true to his signature style for AW13 Garth Cook has taken the folded and sculpted silhouettes that featured heavily throughout his Resort collection and refined them through a sophisticated use of sharp tailoring and unconventional cuts. This season sees the introduction of knitwear which has all been locally produced featuring 100% Merino wool with a vivid lurex shot of emerald greens and sapphire blues. Panels of this Knitwear have also been inserted into dresses and separates, adding depth and texture whilst unexpectedly complementing blends of the finest silk organza, silk velvet and virgin wools in black and grey. These pops of colour and texture add another dimension to Cooks clothes developing an aesthetic that is both architectural and flattering to the body. With AW13, Garth Cook continues to develop a signature style that he has fine tuned and made his own.
About the Designer
garth is based in Perth, Australia. He studied at West Australian School of Art and Design and graduated in 2006. His collections are produced in Australia.
Leading Garth Cook to graduate at the top of his class from the West Australian School of Art and Design in Fashion and Textiles in 2006 was a keen interest in design and architecture forged at a young age.
Fascinated with the construction of Parisian haute couture garments and the intricate details of skilled patternmaking, Garth took a leap of faith by moving to London in order to intern under the helm of designers Marios Schwab and Husam el Odeh.
During his three year stay in the fashion capital, the young designer immersed himself in the European fashion industry by not only training with such skilled creators, but also taking up the opportunity to assist at London Fashion Week, study at the London College of Fashion and attend the Premier Vision Textile Fair in Paris.
Approaching each collection with an element of realism and open mindedness, Garth Cook never takes things too literally when researching his latest inspirational subject matter. Always designing with an iconic figure in mind, the designer puts himself in the shoes of the ‘Garth Cook’ woman in order to create fresh and unique pieces that are modern and wearable for both day and night.
Describing his design ethos as ‘defined, clean, contemporary and forward’, Garth Cook has received several accolades since launching his eponymous label in 2009. Winning the ‘Absolut Emerging Designer’ award at Style Aid allowed the designer to utilise the $5000 cash prize towards the business development of the Garth Cook fashion label.
Since the labels debut, influential Australian media have taken notice with Cleo’s fashion director Aileen Marr and Yen magazines fashion editor Pip Vassett jumping on key pieces from the range for their main fashion editorials. The label also sparked the interest of cult Australian fashion magazine Oyster and iconic hair, beauty and fashion magazine Culture with both publications listing Garth Cook as one of the designers to watch, allocating full-page features to the label.
As well as this support from the leading Australian fashion publications Garth Cook’s designs have been seen on Carrie Bickmore, the head personality of Channel 10 program ‘The 7PM Project’.
Counting his travel experiences as “the best thing I ever did”, the designer looks to the design, layout and feel of his favourite cities – New York, Paris, Sydney, London and Perth- to draw endless inspiration for seasons to come
