GABRIEL_J_SHULDINER

Highly innovative + unique, the signature dark work of Gabriel J. Shuldiner transcends conventions + redefines boundaries... A direct, natural + logical extension of his heavily BLACKENED hybrid_sculptural paintings: “the body merely replaces the wall, floor + ceiling…"_______ Drawing inspiration from the beautifully dark, decadent + erotic prose of one of his favourite poets, Gabriel J. Shuldiner reinterprets the title Charles Baudelaire gave to his first volume of poetry _originally published in 1857_ for his own inaugural + ongoing Fleurs Du Mal Collection. Gabriel considers each piece from the collection “a sort of poem of its own; one that tells its unique, mysterious + romantic story from deep within the fragmented + fractured BLACK_______ Through his instantly recognizable signature dark aesthetic, Gabriel J. Shuldiner imbues a powerful sense of emotion + deep spiritual elegance into the heavily manipulated, elusive layers of inert matter + material that form his work. Information seen + unseen, the resulting BLACKENED objects appear as if transformed + alive_______ Obsessed with the fusion of disparate materials: “how they work together, how they don’t work together; how I make them work together…” each piece from the collection is twisted, folded, bent, torched, ripped, torn, washed, distressed, disheveled, raw, refined, polished + _______ With a heavy penchant for experimentation + a desire to push materials to their "almost" absolute limits, Gabriel's work falls somewhere between the minimal, abstract, conceptual + absurd_______ Gabriel J. Shuldiner constructs, deconstructs + reconstructs each piece from a multiplicity of unique materials + techniques that collectively form the continually evolving hybrid composite material + process he originally developed in early 2011 + has since deemed PBk_G: Post_Apocalyptic BLACK™_______ This unifying BLACK singularity _while unique to each piece_ is composed primarily from various combinations of heavily manipulated modified, remixed + partially recycled acrylic polymer emulsion, carbon BLACK pigment, Japanese Kishu Binchotan charcoal, graphite + selected resin_______ Unless otherwise noted, all chain + hardware is unique + BLACKENED fair trade certified solid sterling silver: hand oxidized + brushed by Gabriel J. Shuldiner_______ Each piece is individually titled + comes presented in its own one of a kind, handmade + eco_sourced Japanese Hinoki Cypress wood box: hand painted, hand sculpted, deconstructed, BLACKENED + signed by Gabriel J. Shuldiner_______ All work from the collection is a handmade one-off piece: hand painted + hand sculpted in Manhattan, New York City_______

_I am soothed by negative space, the glitch, the error, the page not found, the nothing, the BLACK... Those seemingly accidental sounds, spaces + moments______
_Combining elements of minimalism + punk attitude, the idea is to remix unmatchable elements, slash boundaries + create a [beautiful] tension between opposites. A sort of “post_postmodern, post_medium, post_apocalyptic, existential Zen meditation: at times deceptively sardonic, cynical + nihilistic..."______
_The distortion of context + meaning; layers + layers of information seen + unseen... Beyond conditioned habits of perception, thought + speech. Beyond the din, BLACK as an undefined signifier, multi_coded metaphor + paradoxical koan of [absolute] nothingness______
_Where quantum theory becomes spiritual + meanings + classifications dissolve… Where the "subversive avante_garde" + "post_altermodern chic" merge... Falling somewhere between the minimal, abstract, conceptual + absurd, I remain fueled by the ironic + powered by BLACK: the most mysterious, powerful + misunderstood color______
