FELIPEROJASLLANOS

The Grand Hall of the Mountain King, the latest collection from the Felipe Rojas Llanos studio comes as an ode to the physically challenging yet beautiful world of ballet and opera – a narrative of adventurous elegance and poised theatricality, dancing away, entwined, into the early hours of the night. The Autumn/Winter 2011 collection is darker and more lineal than their previous collections, capturing the disposition of a ballet dancer’s art with strong, voluminous silhouettes, and an effortlessly graceful look inspired by the dancers’ movements and the mood inside a grand Opera house. The colour scheme is derived from one specific scene from Michael Powell’s The Red Shoes, allowing a strong and gratifying black colour to take centre stage, accompanied by a harmonious turquoise and a powerful red. The full, sculptured silhouettes and the naked necklines draw inspiration from the impressive shapes and striking visualization of many operatic costume designs, all combined in a collection that has darker and heavier elements at its heart.

Felipe Rojas Llanos is a London-based menswear designer born in Chile in and brought up in Sweden since the age of four. At the age of sixteen he studied Fine Arts at Värnhemsskolan, a Fine Arts school in Malmö Sweden, where he developed his signature drawing style. He eventually moved to London to study fashion and graduated from Central St Martins with a 1st class BA Honours Degree in Menswear in 2008. In September 2008 he was one of the three graduates to be selected to show his BA collection at the V&A – CSM Graduates 2008 Fashion in Motion, a live catwalk installation within the museum space that occurred exclusively throughout a single day. In October 2008 Felipe started the prestigious Central Saint Martins MA Course where he received the Giorgio Armani bursary where he continued to develop his signature style under the guidance of Professor Louise Wilson (OBE). Felipe was also invited to participate in a prestigious fashion show hosted by Belgian magazine, La Vif, in March 2009 during Brussels Fashion Weekend. The show featured ten handpicked new designers from Paris, Antwerp, New York and London, and a judging panel consisting of high profile fashion and accessories designers (with previous panellists such as Ann Demeulemeester and Alexander McQueen). He was also chosen by Not Just A Label as one of their Top Ten Best Menswear Designers in June 2009. In February 2010 he was selected as one of only four menswear designers to show his MA collection, titled Suspended Animation at the Central St Martins A/W 2010 show in London Fashion Week. The minimal collection, was described as luxurious yet highly wearable, evokes the idea of a frozen moment in time, with dramatically voluminous designs, an element of flow and effortless comfort, and couture-like attention to detail. Following the success of the show, Felipe’s MA collection was picked by the iconic fashion boutique Browns, which has in the past introduced great talent such as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane and Marios Schwab – to be sold exclusively in their menswear shop. Felipe was chosen by Fashion East and Topman to show his London Fashion Week debut collection titled Legion as part of the prestigious MAN show in September 2010. Recently Felipe showed as part of MAN for the second time his Autumn Winter collection in London Fashion Week February 2011 titled "The Grand Hall of the Mountain King". The collection was created as an ode to the ballet world. Felipe Rojas Llanos is currently working with his partner Sanam Jehanfard on their SS12 Collection , which is going to be made into a short film for London Fashion Week and debut in Somerset House.
