Victoria Spruce

...random, ridiculous and frequent!

Victoria Spruce is a footwear designer, originally from Kent but now based in London. Victoria has recently graduated with an MA in Womenswear Footwear from Royal College of Art (2011), and has always been inspired by architecture, sculpture and structure, which is clearly visible throughout her footwear collections. Emphasized by her use of hard materials combined with soft leathers, she gives a vivid contrast between the traditional and the new. Also evident throughout her collections, is the belief that the upper and heel should be thought about as one, and not 2 separate pieces that are joined at the end. This is emphasized further by the fluidity of line that Victoria uses consistently to create organic, flowing shapes that evolve around the foot.

Nothing inspires me like…
Structure. I love discovering new buildings and sculptures and imagining the shoes that I can design from them.

I hope…
That this is only the start and I can keep going!

Cultural influences…
Are everywhere. It’s impossible to not be influenced and inspired by them in such a multicultural city, whether you are aware of it or not.

I got where I am...
Because I have always wanted to be here, but I’m still only just at the beginning. Its taking hard work and perseverance but I’m pretty sure there’s the odd fluke of good luck here and there too.

Fashion can sometimes...
Change the way I feel in an instant. It has the ability to excite, dramatise, confuse and leave you totally speechless (and speechless isn’t always good!).

I sense that...
That there is a big change in footwear design and manufacturing waiting patiently in the wings. I am only one of a few designers experimenting with new ways to make shoes, and when it finally comes to the forefront, I think it will be a very exciting time for footwear.

Money makes...
Life a hell of a lot easier when you’re trying to develop a collection!

Faith in…
Yourself is totally necessary if you want to succeed. There are people that will love what you do, and people that will hate it. As soon as you stop believing in it, then it’s time to stop.

Creativity comes from...
Within.

Love is…
Overwhelming and distracting but I love it…

My dreams are…
Random, ridiculous and frequent!! I will dream up to 3 times a night, about the most bizarre things… a flying skateboard in Somalia and stealing duvet biscuits are particularly memorable.

I wouldn't pay for…
Sex.

The earliest memory...
I have of shoes are my helicopter (or lelilopter as I pronounced it then) shoes. They were little pink canvas Mary Jane’s with helicopters on them. I loved them.

I get bored easily...
In my own company. I am incredibly proficient in talking non-stop about absolute nonsense… and if no one is around to listen, then I don’t really know what to do with myself.

Studios make me...
Happy. It’s great to be around creative people and bounce ideas from one to another. It’s inspiring and it also gives me people to talk meaningless nonsense to.

I don't think...
Before I talk.

I like making...
Food. It’s my down time when I get home, time for me to shut off the shoes and create something yummy instead.

I wouldn't want to...
Ever give up.
