Sylvio Giardina

...love is a smile you aren't expecting

Sylvio Giardina was born in Paris and moved to Rome to attend the Rome Fashion and Costume Academy, where he is currently based. After a renowned collaboration with haute-couture designer Fernando Gattinoni, he established the brand, Grimaldi Giardina, and was featured in the official calendar of a Paris Haute-Couture fashion event. From there he moved onto the launch of a new label, Sylvio Giardina, while also working in visual arts as one half of creative duo Stato di Famiglia. The work of Sylvio Giardina is focused on the search for a new silhouette, subverting current aesthetic standards believing that the female body represents a free and flexible vision, and opposing the glossy image of slim and conventional proportions portrayed by the traditional fashion scene. In drawing a soft body shape while at the same time being dynamic, Giardina redefines proportions creating new lines and sinuous volumes. The leading theme is the idea of the female body’s sphericity accompanying every item created to make her body appear free.

I scream when…
I don’t scream.

Money makes…
It’s meaningless to assume that money is something making life comfortable, it’s essential..

Did you know…
I became myopic.

Love now because…
There has always been love.

I dance like…
I love it, to the rhythms of oriental music in particular.

I have never…
Bathed in an ocean that is an intense blue.

I once thought…
Awful things about the ones who copied my work, instead now, due to the passing of times and the wisdom resulting from the words of Jeff Zeldman, “don’t worry when the other ones will steal you work, be worried once they will stop doing that”.

Love is…
A smile you aren’t expecting.

My dreams are…
I never remember what I dream, I can dream when conscious.

Pain comes from…
A night without sleep due to time spent working on a silhouette.

My favourite place is…
Tel Aviv, where a very dear friend of mine is based and there is great energy.

I'm a perfectionist…
Yes, but just to the extent required. Actually that’s a lie! The truth is I’m an obsessive perfectionist.

My goal…
I never played soccer.

The earliest memory...
My mum purchased a fashion magazine to choose new patterns from but I stole the magazine, cutting out the plates and modifying them according to my taste.

My first crush...
It’s a distant memory. I fell in love with a boy that walked down my road hand in hand with his girlfriend. I looked at him with the eyes of a guy in love but never met him.

My mum...
Is adorable. I love her.

I like making...
Breakfast and having it on a terrace… if only I had one!

I love getting older...
To use all the products to prevent wrinkles.
