STUDY NY

Tara St James was born and raised in Montreal, a city known for cultivating young talent before setting it free on the world. In primary school, Tara St James was a big math nerd. She won a contest to become Canada’s top math student in the 4th grade. In high school, Tara was captain of the debate team and planned to study political science and become the first female Prime Minister of Canada. Instead, she studied menswear tailoring in a design school that offered a lot in terms of technical training but lacked in fostering creativity. After graduation she spent a year travelling around Australia, making costumes for Mardi Gras and doing work for local tailors. Upon her return to Montreal, she started working in the denim industry where she learned how to design, cut, fit and wash a pair of jeans in more ways than are imaginable. After 6 years making jeans, she knew it wasn’t her calling, and applied her industry education to starting an eco-friendly mass-consumer line called Covet. This line benefited from her vast knowledge of production and textile sourcing. In 2009, Tara finally started Study NY, a line that was all her own. Small, conceptual, sustainable and ever-changing, Study is her outlet for all she feels is missing from the fashion industry. Mainly it’s her way to make clothing she wants to wear, and wants to see others wearing.
