STUDY NY

...conceptual, sustainable and ever-changing

Tara St James was born and raised in Montreal, a city known for cultivating young talent before setting it free on the world. In primary school, Tara St James was a big math nerd. She won a contest to become Canada’s top math student in the 4th grade. In high school, Tara was captain of the debate team and planned to study political science and become the first female Prime Minister of Canada. Instead, she studied menswear tailoring in a design school that offered a lot in terms of technical training but lacked in fostering creativity. After graduation she spent a year travelling around Australia, making costumes for Mardi Gras and doing work for local tailors. Upon her return to Montreal, she started working in the denim industry where she learned how to design, cut, fit and wash a pair of jeans in more ways than are imaginable. After 6 years making jeans, she knew it wasn’t her calling, and applied her industry education to starting an eco-friendly mass-consumer line called Covet. This line benefited from her vast knowledge of production and textile sourcing. In 2009, Tara started Study NY, a line that was all her own. Small, conceptual, sustainable and ever-changing, Study is her outlet for all she feels is missing from the fashion industry. Mainly it’s her way to make clothing she wants to wear, and wants to see others wearing.

Nothing inspires me like…
The unexpected. I never look for inspiration, I know it will be there when I need it most... There’s always a moment of panic that inspiration has disappeared. That usually occurs right before it presents itself.

I hope…
I never stop creating. The day I dislike my work is the day I will stop doing it.

Cultural influences…
Need to be preserved. We are so rapidly losing traditional customs and techniques in all areas of society.

I got where I am...
By being nice to people. And through a lot of hard work.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be incredibly terrifying. But it should always be fun.

Money makes…
Work so much easier. But it makes life much more complicated.

Love now because…
It’s not a limited resource, there’s no point in saving it for later.

I dance like…
Nobody is watching.

Faith in…
Oneself is more important than money, education or accolades.

Creativity comes from…
Having to make something out of nothing.

If I could…
Then I probably already have, or will someday.

I have never…
Been to Iceland. But I plan to go.

I once thought…
I would be Prime Minister of Canada.

Love is…
Essential.

My dreams are…
Much better when I’m awake.

My vice is…
Cuddling.

I live East…
Of the East River.

I'm a perfectionist…
And I really like to organise things.

My mum...
Is my biggest fan and has supported every choice I’ve made. Even the bad ones!

I get bored easily...
So I try to have projects started to keep me busy.

I don't think...
Before I speak, and it gets me into trouble.

I tried to live...
In a small town, it didn’t suit me very well at all.
