SETH PRATT

...enforcing the active resistance

Seth Pratt will impress you, it’s that simple. Born in Paragould Arkansas, I don’t think anyone could’ve guessed he’d end up here, in LA. But he has arrived, thankfully. Although he hasn’t released an official collection before, and he’s never had a real fashion show of his own, he’s worked behind some of LA fashion's most successful names; Grey Ant and Brian Lichtenberg.

Pulling his inspiration from old school undergarments and the kind of colours you’d find in a box of crayons at a restaurant, he’s created a line of jumpers, leggings and dresses that will make you feel like a grown-up whose long johns and onesies from childhood matured with you.

With crotches cut so low people might think your pants are pulled down and a tie-dye scheme that makes for something other than the average hippy t-shirt, this designer might be the one to make “too matchy matchy” the goal of getting dressed. Whether he’s painting watercolours of models he finds in magazines at home, or sewing together a hat complete with a primary coloured jersey string Mohawk, he is sure to do it right. Somewhere between Paragould and LA, Seth Pratt has found an eye for fashion that is well finished, coherent and definitely wearable.

Seth Pratt is a fashion designer today, because…
I choose to be. I could also choose to be….

If Seth Pratt would not have become a designer, he would be…
Well, let’s see…Before I became a designer, I lived in Arkansas and I spent my time watching TV and dreaming, and then talking about TV with my friends, you know typically full of culture and painfully ignorant to anything about the real world…so I suppose I would still be doing that. And eating Britney’s favourite chips while watching Britney’s VMA performances on YouTube. Classic. Oh and I would probably be married.

Seth Pratt spent his life school years…
Behaving in very ritualistic ways with other ritualistic people, sat on buses praying for salvation from myself, I was however given a good environment to work as an artist. I went to a very small private school so my teachers had known me since I was in Kindergarten so they knew me well and knew what my skills were and allowed me to be creative and artistic at the expense of the other subjects. I spent half my senior year in the school's auditorium building a 30 foot tree and popping out my imitation of Couture Dior gowns for costumes for Cinderella’s Evil Stepmother and Stepsister.

Seth Pratt’s friends think…
I’m actually quite pleased with my friend selection at the moment, some of the most genuine interesting nice people I’ve ever met. Definitely there for me when I was down so you know great friends, friends who no matter where you are you always have the best time. Just plain good company. But, to quote my friend Andrea “I think you’re the cutest little man ever”, I suppose that’s what my friends think of me, I hope they think I’m as awesome as I think they are.

When Seth Pratt was a teenager, he dreamed of being…
Able to have complete creative freedom I guess. I always struggled with being limited because of social expectations, because of where I was raised and the culture there and the religion in which I was brought up. I credit all that as the reason I bounced out at the first opportunity to go to college somewhere else in the States. Of course my major of choice was not what I’m doing now…Musical Theatre.

He knew he would become a fashion designer when…
I suppose when I was knocking off designer dresses for Barbie when I was ten. I sewed each one of those by hand until I discovered my mother’s sewing machine. Also, when I lived in NY I made costumes for my classmates’ performances and realized I enjoyed that more than the performing aspect. For one of my last performances, a song called “Fiasco” from a musical called Coco. About Coco Chanel. And I made a Giant satin curtain with huge black velvet Chanel C’s on it and I sang and danced around in front of it before pulling it down and using it to make a make-shift dress and walking runway.
P.S. Katherine Hepburn played Coco on Broadway, she sings, it’s brilliant.

He would never…
I used to say never, I only recently discovered that I was lying.

Seth Pratt gets inspired by...
Everyone and everything I encounter in my life. I spend a lot of time Google imaging, I don’t know whether this is a hobby of mine or what but sometimes my desktop gets so intensely covered with drag and drop photos that you can’t even see my background image.

The defining moment in his career was…
When my balls dropped and I became a Man Man.

For a day, Seth Pratt would like to be...
Truly limitless, I suppose that would make me god, but I don’t want to be god. This probably doesn’t make any sense to anyone but me. So only ponder it for a few moments before you move on. Thanks.

In 10 years from now, Seth Pratt would like to see himself…
Well at the moment I’m about to go take a shower, then after that I might brush my teeth but I can’t make any promises. As for ten years from now...Your guess is as good as mine. I would hope to be living and loving somewhere...somewhere GOOD.

If Seth Pratt ruled the world, he would…
Enforce the Active Resistance.

He would describe Seth Pratt’s personality as...
I’m quite shy, in fact painfully so. If I let you in, I’m very giving and loving, but you have to earn it. I guess I would say overall that I’m chilled, it takes a lot to make me angry.

Seth Pratt wishes the next Seth Pratt…
Not quite sure what this question is so I’m going to wish the next me best of luck.

If he could live his life again…
I’m very pleased with the person I am today, living my life again wouldn’t bear the same results, so I wouldn’t live my life again. But if I would, I‘d come back as Vivienne Westwood.
