Sang A

...finding inspiration in everyday observations

Sang A Im-Propp launched her collection of exotic skin and leather accessories in Spring 2006 to rave reviews. Her intricate and exceptional use of alligator, python and ostrich skins, amongst others, quickly established her as a designer to watch in the luxury accessories market and beyond. Today, she continues to combine a keen interest in intriguing colours, shapes and textures with an effortless sense of style that has become the trademark of the SANG A namesake collection. Despite a natural inclination towards fashion, Sang A’s first profession was not in the industry she now calls home. Raised in her native home, South Korea, she started dancing at the age of 10 in youth dance companies that performed on an international level. She continued her studies in dance and continued on to become a successful singer and actress in the Korean entertainment industry. She released three albums on the Samsung Records label and established herself as one of Korea’s most promising celebrities by the young age of 26. Her love for fashion and accessories, however, was ever-present; she would often style her own music videos and photo shoots by creating signature looks which defined her as a style setter throughout Korea and the world.

Upon Sang A’s arrival in New York City, she found herself drawn to a different world: fashion. She decided to pursue these interests and began honing her skills at The Parsons School of Design. Through her education there and internship experience accrued with high-profile stylists such as Victoria Bartlett and Lisa Von Weise, Sang A decided to start her own business, beginning with accessories. During her travels to Europe, Sang A discovered the workshops where French and Italian artisans have crafted luxury accessories for generations. This fuelled her passion for exotic skins and beautiful textures, which shaped the SANG A brand as we know it today. Now, as a budding talent, she finds inspiration through everyday observations ranging from her travels to people watching in the streets of SoHo.The SANG A collection has seen significant growth and success since its launch in 2006 and continues to develop in innovative ways. Her global presence continues to grow, especially through her involvement in various international and New York City-based charity organisations. In June of 2010, Sang A became a member of The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Sang A currently resides in New York City.

Nothing inspires me like…
People and their individual spirits. I am always amazed at how much passion or determination certain people have. When I see such fire in someone, it inspires me to be more passionate about my work.

I hope…
Some snow comes soon to New York City. It has been such a warm winter so far and I haven’t had the chance to wear some of my favorite pieces. I always love the romantic, poetic, meditative feeling that a snow storm brings…being warm inside my home, steaming sweet potatoes (a favorite winter snack), watching Korean TV (memories of home) as I watch the snow fall outside.

Cultural influences…
Maurizio Cattelan, Ellsworth Kelly, Barry Manilow, The Selby, Korean Pop Music, Robert Knoke…These are just some of the Artists that I admire and help me to release my creativity. I get inspired by seeing artists doing their work, performing their art and craft, and having a certain transparent quality into their process…

I got where I am...
Through instinct and determination. When it comes to my work, I follow my gut on the choices that I make. Once a decision is made, it takes hard work and persistence to stand by that decision and see it through.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be found where you least expect it. Sometimes when I’m running errands or just going about my day, I see someone wearing something that catches my eye. And it might not be the article of clothing that they are wearing but it could be how it is being worn and how that individual stylizes that article to make it their own. It always makes me smile when someone catches my eye unexpectedly.

Did you know…
That I love to go camping. It was one of my favorite things to do when I was younger. I love being surrounded by nature, breathing the fresh air, and enjoying the tranquillity of being away from everyone. It helps to clear my head and always inspires my creativity.

Love now because…
It makes room for more love tomorrow…I am often surrounded by people who put things off until tomorrow. I am a strong believer in getting it done so you can do so much more tomorrow…I apply this to my daily routines but also the wonderful things in life as well, such as sharing your love with your family & friends.

I dance like…
Bobby Brown in the 90s. Clubs & dancing were so much more fun in that decade; things were easier & more carefree…there was less ego & self-awareness…not everyone caring what they look like because it will end up on Facebook tomorrow morning…

Creativity comes from…
A dream. My inspiration always starts from my dreams (by day or night)…that moment when I let my eyes close, consciousness drift away & leave my mind open to reflect on all of what I have seen…to let it come together into a beautiful and exciting dream flash of inspiration & creativity.

If I could…
I would and I always do. If there is something that I want, I always reach for it. I would rather try for it and give it my best than regret to never have tried at all.

My dreams are…
Evolving day by day. Everyday I have new ideas and new goals that I want to achieve. There are so many creative opportunities out there and I feel people should pursue as many as their hearts desire.

I wouldn't pay for…
Something to make me something else. I don’t buy things for the label or because it is “trendy”. When I buy something, it’s simply because I like it and enjoy it…either it makes me laugh or smile or there is something quirky about it that brightens my day whenever I look at it.

Studio makes me…
Feel at home. I’ve been in them my entire life…dance studios, music studios, TV studios, and now my design studio. I feel at home in these environments of productivity & creative expression…the place where it all comes together…

I'm a perfectionist…
When it comes to my designs. I have a very specific vision for each and every aspect of my bags: the logo, hardware, the finish on the hardware, the hand/feel of the skins, etc. I put so much care and attention to every detail because I am excited to share with others the ideas that I have in my head and I want them to be just as excited as I am.

My Mum...
Makes the world’s best kimchi. She always prepares my favorite foods from Korea and ships them to me so I can enjoy them all in NYC just as I would in her kitchen in Seoul… just thinking about it now is already making my mouth water.

I get bored easily...
When I’m not challenged. My dreams have never provided me with the easy route because I believe that when you take the harder route, you get better results. And If I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it all the way and give it everything I’ve got.

I've been a Buddhist...
My whole life.

I love getting older...
I cannot wait until I’m 65.
