RECKLESS ERICKA

...balancing classic tailoring with edgy silhouettes and colours

Reckless Ericka is a quirky, contemporary label, providing differentiated products with a strong brand value. The Singapore-based label consists of a team of 4 – Afton Chen (22), Diorelle Sy (22), Ruth Marbun (23) and Louis Koh (26). The label encompasses the whole spirit of the co-founders as risk-taking, fun loving and adventurous. Unconventional and off-beat as it sounds, it is in line with the brand’s personality. The main concept of Reckless Ericka is "Euro-centric". We focus on balancing classic tailoring with edgy use of silhouette and colours, and constructing avant-garde silhouettes with classic details. This infuses edginess and quirkiness into our brand, giving it our very own refreshing identity.

Nothing inspires me like…
AFTON: I don’t have a fixed, single object of fascination and inspiration. Because inspiration is the queerest thing! It comes from everywhere, it could be in any form, and best of all, it springs up when you least expect it.
DIORELLE: Fabrics inspire me. By mixing textures and colours, I'm giving the design a character or personality.
RUTH: History, art, and music can be a major inspiration but everyday surroundings can also be an interesting source to look out for. How people dress, the composition of objects, or just the vibe of a street can bring out ideas out of the blue.
LOUIS: I am strongly influence by fashion show producer and mentor, Daniel Boey, in his views and creativeness towards fashion and the industry.

I hope…
To make fashion a need, and not a want.

Cultural influences…
We all come from different countries and have different backgrounds – Afton & Louis (Singapore), Ruth (Indonesia) and Diorelle (Philippines). I feel that fashion has now evolved and mutated over time, so that we are now no longer defined – whether culturally, sexually or ethically.

I got where I am...
We debuted in January 2009 and we are simply ecstatic that we were given the chance to showcase alongside those international designers (Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood & Gareth Pugh) during the Singapore Audi Fashion Festival (May 2009). Not only does it give us credibility, I feel that it is a really rare opportunity for a young and new label like us to be able to soak up this awesome experience. It is indeed a wonderful platform for us, but of course it doesn’t stop here, in fact there is still much hard work needed to propel to greater heights.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be a vicious trend circle. So make sure you are not tangled up in it. That would only make things monotonous :-)

I scream when….
DIORELLE: I see a cockroach... and then I faint. Haha true story. I would not go into a glass box filled with cockroaches like in one of those game shows even for a billion dollars.

Cake makes me…
AFTON: Geeky. I love good cakes and finding out how they are made. Tasting different flavours, textures, colours is like a yummy science experiment to me.

If I could…
RUTH: Sing, I would rather be a rock star. Seems like they are way more fun and cooler. Don't worry, the best part is that, at the end of the day, I can still be a designer, with less effort and much more hype, yay!

I once thought…
DIORELLE: That unicorns are for real. I saw one in a dream and thought it was real until I was about 14. I embarrassingly found out during a Greek mythology class.

My vice is…
AFTON: Selective gluttony. I can’t take my eyes and mouth off good food.

Pain comes from…
RUTH: People with a bad sense of humor, and the worst thing is when you are stuck with a bunch of them and you just got to fake it. It eats you from inside, makes your soul rot and your day grey.

I wouldn't pay for…
RUTH: A white T-shirt just for the sake of the logo printed on it. I will pay for craftsmanship, design, cut, fabric, history, or randomly for no reason just because it makes me happy.

I get bored easily...
AFTON: And I guess that’s where my obsessive reading disorder comes in. I am addicted to reading everything, from the percentages of cholesterol of canned spam, to calories in a box of cereal, ingredients on perfume boxes (octylacrylamide copolymer, citronellol), to the chemicals on a shampoo label (sodium laureth sulfate) when I'm showering. I would even read it if it were in Italian or French – even though I have absolutely no idea what it means. I just love reading. En cas de contact avec les yeux, rincer abondamment. :-)

My biggest regret...
LOUIS: Is not pursuing my career as a sculptor five years ago! But what a relief to have dived into the fashion scene and being a part of Singapore fashion.

I love getting older...
DIORELLE: Because I get to find out what future lies ahead of me. I hate not knowing what will happen next. I hate it so much that I read the ending of a book before even reading chapter one.
