Radha Dumra

...this London based designer believes that understanding yourself first leads to strong design, no matter what you find.

The age-old debate of nature vs. nurture in how we develop is hotly contested, but sometimes we come across people who seem to strike a balance between the two and Radha Dumra is one of them. Early exposure to the knitwear industry led this London born, India raised designer to pursue a career in fashion and launch her eponymous label in 2011. So after completing her studies at London College of Fashion and the National Institute of Design in New Delhi, Radha’s built-in know how took over, leaving her to explore and carve out her own identity for the brand. Drawing her inspiration from surrealism, body modification and the ‘Anti’ trend, this designer’s signature is a monochromatic aesthetic with a devotion to details. Her exploration of our inner selves and psyche forces this label to take on a transmutable role that makes us acknowledge the darker side we all have; and accept it...

Nothing inspires me like…
Looking for beauty in the repugnant, everything by Edgar Allan Poe, excavating secrets of the universe & celebrating the feminine dynamic.

I hope…
My work continues to be a way for people to embrace and celebrate who they are.

Cultural influences…
Growing up in a conservative society where people don’t embrace originality as much as they do conformity, it became compulsory to push boundaries through my work. I have never been interested in conventional beauty or fleeting trends but in creative expression as a declaration of independence.

I got where I am...
By letting my spirit light the way and staying true to my passion. I’ve only just started. I have a long way to go.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be a big party celebrating uniqueness but on the down side, it can be dangerous, enslaving people to follow current trends and encouraging further materialistic consumerism. People constantly want things to ease insecurity about a lack of identity and a need to conform to socially accepted standards. Because of the pressure to "fit in", other important considerations like personal style are totally neglected. That’s why I love NJAL, as they promote individuality.

Love is…
Finding the beauty in oneself, and finding another to share it with. Love is also the courage to embrace the shadow side of myself and in the other. It is the most mystical of cosmic forces, a sacred reservoir of yummy energy.

My Goal...
Is to practice living in the moment, each moment contains magical opportunities so I don't want to miss my chance to love, learn, connect and transform when I look back. This is it, it's NOW or never.

My dreams...
Give wings to my soul.

I’ve been a Buddhist...
For 5 years. I believe in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, a humanistic philosophy of infinite respect for the sanctity of life. Through Buddhist faith and practice, I have been able to transform my inner life and increase my vital life force, wisdom, compassion and courage to face the challenges which confront us daily.

My future is....
Super shiny and extra bright! I aim to inspire people to live with the awareness of value creation, not just for themselves but also for others. A Buddhist premise that means what you DO and HOW you do it, must create value for all involved.

Pain comes from...
Resistance to change and non-acceptance.

I once thought...
I was weird, now I am the most normal person I know.

The earliest memory...
Was in my garden, talking to the birds, butterflies, & squirrels. I would look for my special friends the nymphs, mermaids, tree spirits and water fairies that lived in the backyard.

My vice is...
Pink champagne truffles by GODIVA. Bless!

Creativity comes from...
All around us. It is the language of the universe. It's how our spirit keeps us connected to the divine.
