Rachel Boston

...I desperately want to start some underground community that is guarding some magical phenomenon.

Rachel Boston is a London born and based jewellery designer and maker. Rachel graduated in Jewellery Design from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and continued to study at the Gemological Institute of America in New York where she received her diploma in Diamond Grading. Her signature aesthetic of pure and strong forms find inspiration from unconventional sources: looking to nature, contemporary culture and high fashion to celebrate both the beautiful and the damned. Her recently launched collection ‘The Protector’ demonstrates this with a reimagining of beetles and scorpions; taking their organic, aggressive forms and infusing them with sophistication and rock ‘n’ roll. The Protector is driven by a strong creative narrative resulting in unique, fashion forward pieces. Meticulously crafted whilst retaining a sense of their natural beauty they can be worn by both men and women. All jewellery is created by Rachel in her East London workshop where she maintains an emphasis on craftsmanship, artistry, and luxury. Fusing both modern and traditional making techniques the element of hand fabrication is integral to achieving products of both high quality and raw originality.

Nothing inspires me like…
The natural history museum I could spend days there just walking around soaking everything in. If I'm ever in a bad place I just like to go there by myself and clear my head.

I hope…
That I’ll keep doing this forever. I love being on the bench making new pieces and designing new collections. I find it difficult to imagine doing anything else so I hope that people will continue to like my work so that I can stay building a brand for a long time.

Cultural influences…
My mother is Venezuelan so I’m very influenced by South American culture but otherwise I think that I’m really intrigued by a huge variety of cultures from all across the world. I think it’d be dangerous to only be interested by the one you’re surrounded in.

I got where I am...
From sheer stubbornness. For not wanting to design for someone else and compromise what I think is good. Also from having friends and family who have supported me in so many ways, from believing in me enough in the beginning to comforting me when I go a bit crazy and emotional.

Fashion can sometimes...
Frustrate me. I try not to focus on trends because at the end of the day I want my jewellery to last and not fall in and out fashion. I want them to be beautiful on their own not dependent on a seasonal style.

I dance like...
A violent butterfly having a spasm according to my mum. I like to dance in the kitchen when we cook, but she always refuses to dance with me because she's scared that I’ll knock her down. It doesn't do much for my confidence!

If I could...
Start a secret society I would. I desperately want to start some underground community that is guarding some magical phenomenon. Sadly though I have no secrets to guard.

I once thought...
I had super powers. I waited patiently for my letter to Hogwarts, then when that didn’t come I thought maybe I was like Sabrina and I’d get my powers at 16, but sadly that didn’t happen either so I’m sadly having to let go of that dream.

I like making…
Jewellery to music or having audiobooks playing in the background. I cannot handle silence so I have Spotify playlists that keep me going through out the day. It can get a bit dangerous if I’m on the bench and I start doing my violent butterfly dancing.

Love is…
Never having to say you’re sorry. That’s according to my dad, which he just says so he can get away with murder and never have to apologise for it.

My vice is...
Cheeseburgers and Playstation. If you combine the two I’m pretty much yours for life.

London is…
My enigma. I’ve lived here all my life and I am still discovering new weird and wonderful places. I have no sense of direction so I’m always getting lost but I like it really because I always stumble upon funny little boutiques or old cobbled streets I never knew existed - but then it’s frustrating as I can never find my way back to them.

The earliest memory...
Of making jewellery was when I used to make charm bracelets for my friends’ birthdays. I used to make charms from things like bottle tops and cracker toys.

My first crush...
Was on J from 5ive. I knew all the words to all 5ive's songs and I was convinced that he was my soul mate. I'm still hoping for a 5ive reunion but I have a sinking feeling J has outgrown his bad boy eyebrow piercing.

I scream when…
I accidentally saw into my finger on the bench. I’m actually very accident-prone so my poor scarred hands are often reminders that I didn’t choose my career very wisely.
