Narz

...exploring ways of covering the body

My work is inspired by everything that goes on around me. My inspiration for this collection was cultural symbolism. How people create each other. How we are moulded to be what our culture lets us. Are we perceived by others the way we intend to be perceived? Or are we judged under their own cultural definitions. Who controls this? This is what brings us together, but at the same time separates us. This inspired the manipulation of the fabric. The complicated structured moulds of a culture goes round and twists, then knots, then stops and gets lost, eventually becoming something which blends in, spending its days creating more moulds. The silhouette explores the ways of covering the body, but at the same time exposing it. Using jewellery to attract attention to certain parts of the body. Pleats represent the recurring patterns of a culture. I want to create debate in people’s minds from all different cultures.

Narz is a fashion designer today...
Because she wants to create unique garments by using new techniques and unusual materials. She can do nothing but create and explore.

If Narz would not have become a designer...
She would be an archaeologist digging in an ancient Egyptian site, looking for long forgotten buried treasures.

Narz spent her life school years...
Getting in trouble in class for not listening to the rules. Daydreaming, sketching, and art, being her favourite subject, creating surreal images and sculptures.

Narz's friends think...
She is a weirdo, bossy, funny, loud, quiet, serious, laid back, unique.

When Narz was a teenager she dreamed of...
Being a fashion designer that changed the world like a super hero! Or an archaeologist in Egypt leading an important expedition.

She knew she would become a fashion designer...
When she could not think of anything else but new ways of covering the human body. Had urges to just pick up a pen and sketch new ideas. Would drape fabric round own body to create a unique silhouette.

She would never...
Stop being unique, creative and inspired.

Narz gets inspired by...
Music, culture, life, old dirty places, old people, everything old, everything new, a generation that isn’t born, things that aren’t real, dreams, mechanical objects, jewellery, symbolism, reactions, myths, religion, thoughts, destiny.

The defining moment in her career was...
That moment has yet to happen, don’t know when or how, but it will. Or maybe it already has!

For a day Narz would like to be...
8 years old making magical potions with water, mud and glitter. Or a magical genie so she could go through every century that has passed.

In ten years from now Narz would like to see herself...
Be an inspiration to upcoming fashion designers. Make a difference in the world, while fulfilling her ambition as a daring designer.

If Narz ruled the world she would...
Let every ungrateful child that doesn’t appreciate the opportunities that we have spend one month in a Third World country living like the children there. People do not realise what they have until it's gone. If they realise that at a young age, they would appreciate it for the rest of their lives.

She would describe Narz’s personality as...
Quirky, multi-layered, serious, funny, caring, determined.

Narz wishes the next Narz...
Narz came from one mould that was destroyed in a fire after she was created.
She is the one and only Narz.

If she could live her life again...
She would dream the same dreams, walk the same paths and learn from the same mistakes.
